GAMERS UNITE FOR MEN’S HEALTH: WellPlayed Project to host Movember Videogame Challenge

Friday November 9, 2018 WellPlayed Project is using the power of video games to raise funds and awareness for men’s health by hosting the Movember Videogame Challenge on Sunday 25th November from 2pm to 4pm (AEST).

The Movember Videogame Challenge allows gamers to be matched in a squad of like-minded players or form their own squad to play Brawlhalla and Path of Exile.  Gamers can play at home, or for Brisbane locals, book one of 27 game-ready computers at the new QUT e-Sports Arena.

Movember Ambassador and gamer Reece McDowall, will be throwing his hat into the matching algorithm and live streaming his squad’s gameplay on twitch.tv/rdiddyau.

WellPlayed Project – a free gaming platform connecting like-minded players – is funded through the Movember Foundation Social Innovators Challenge, a $5.6 million investment grant for outside-the-box projects aimed at strengthening social connections for men of all walks of life and interests.

Dr Daniel Johnson, Director of the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Games Research Lab, which has established the WellPlayed Project, said the challenge is the first in a series of events designed to connect people through videogames.

“Research evidence from around the world clearly shows the social benefits of video games – people build and maintain real connections when playing with others, whether online or in person,” he said.

“Everyone is welcome, from the most to the least experienced. If there are people out there who are wondering about taking the plunge into multiplayer gaming – this is their chance to try it out in a friendly, supportive environment.”

Competing squads will receive free Valve Family and Friends Game Keys and go in the draw to win one of five $100 JB Hi-Fi vouchers by posting an in-game moment on the WellPlayed Project Facebook page.

It’s quick to register and the WellPlayed team have made it easy to be matched or form a squad. It’s also a great way to introduce friends to online gameplay, with Steam and Discord how-to guides and game ready info on the website.

Gamers can join the WellPlayed Project Movember fundraising team to raise funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.
