Colin Hay Solo Down Under 2025
‘Hay is someone you could sit down with for a cup of coffee and never get the feeling you’re conversing with a Grammy Award winner. It’s this depth of character, along with Hay’s sense of self that makes him a wonderful songwriter and storyteller.’ – InFocus Visions
Armed with a new album, revered troubadour Colin Hay, will be gracing Australia in December with a musical masterclass in storytelling – playing a collection of songs that spans the length of his highly successful and independently driven career.
Few artists can lay claim to the oeuvre that Colin Hay has contributed to stages, screens and radio airwaves across the globe for over four-and-a-half decades. Those who have heard his songs on the radio will tell you it’s his soaring vocals that set him apart from the masses, but only the punters who have witnessed his stage presence can understand the breadth of his talent which goes far beyond strings and octaves…the Colin Hay experience is an enchanting and anecdotal trip not to miss.
The frontman of Grammy-winning, multi-platinum selling 80s outfit Men At Work has released fifteen critically acclaimed albums over the course of 40 years. During his remarkable solo career, Hay’s frequent appearances at LA’s Largo club helped garner him a legion of fans in the entertainment world. Among them was actor/director Zach Braff, who called his mix of heartfelt song writing and hilarious storytelling “one of the most amazing things I had ever seen.” Braff went on to feature Hay’s music prominently in the GRAMMY-winning soundtrack for Garden State and invited him to appear as himself on the hit series Scrubs, which helped introduce his music to a whole new generation of listeners.
In more recent years, his artistry has been celebrated with APRA’s esteemed Billions Award (marking one billion streams of the song ‘Down Under’ which was given a rebirth in 2022 with Luude‘s chart-topping drum and bass cut) and the equally prestigious Ted Albert Award for outstanding services to Australian music. Off the back of these career milestones, Hay has just received a Spotify 1 Billion Streams Plaque for ‘Down Under’.
His soon-to-be-announced new release Man At Work Vol. 2 is another thoughtfully curated collection of past and present music: some reimagined, some stripped back and a few genre-bending collaborations that further prove Hay’s versatility in an ever-changing industry.
In the coming months Hay will be touring the US extensively: kicking off with Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band, then fronting Men At Work as part of a triple bill summer jaunt with rock legends Toto and three-time Grammy award winning artist Christopher Cross, before embarking on a run of solo shows. Hay will then head to UK to further tour his solo show which will land in some of Australia’s most iconic music venues in early December. Diehard fans say the power of his performance is as much about the narratives he weaves, as it is about the music.
‘And it is that unique blend of cultural exposure–Hay’s parents emigrated from Scotland to Australia when he was a teenager–that lends itself to Hay’s one-of-a-kind vocals. His is a voice that can be full of pain and sorrow, express desire, and offer tepid hope–sometimes in the same song. And no matter the tempo, Hay’s songs are always pensive in a way that makes you think about your own life and what you want from it.’ – The Music Universe
