Chery KP31 ute concept makes first international debut
Chery has unveiled its new ute concept in Australia, showcasing what is set to become the world’s first Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) Diesel ute. Production models are set to arrive in Q4 2026.
Its debut marks a significant shift in the market, offering a new plug-in alternative in response to the rising demand for electrified powertrains that deliver fuel efficiency and lower emissions, while meeting Aussies’ demands for serious performance from their work and lifestyle vehicles.
Utes are an iconic and deeply ingrained part of Australian culture, with over 235,000 new utes sold in 2025 alone, accounting for roughly 20% of all new vehicle sales (source: RACV). Chery has built this ute with the way Australians live and work at the forefront; designed to handle tough job sites, long regional drives, and weekend getaways with ease.
“Utes aren’t just a vehicle in Australia, they’re a vital part of how we work and play. By introducing the world’s first plug-in hybrid diesel ute, we’re redefining what capability looks like for the segment. Our technology delivers the torque, towing, and long-distance range Australian’s demand, whether for work or recreation, while significantly reducing fuel use and emissions.” Says Lucas Harris, Chery Australia Chief Operating Officer.
Designed to meet the needs of every Australian ute buyer, this vehicle offers a competitive 1000kg payload and 3.5-tonne towing capacity. Powered by a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine, it’s 10% more fuel efficient compared to the average diesel powertrain and boasts a class-leading thermal efficiency rating of 47%.
Visually, it presents a commanding presence with a snorkel, chunky 285/70 R17 all-terrain tyres, a tub rack with 4×4 recovery tracks and a matte grey finish. The production ute will be a length of 5450mm. A petrol PHEV Chery ute will also join the line-up in 2027.
More details will be revealed closer to the ute’s official launch later in the year.
