Family fun!

The legendary fictional “comic” characters of Gaul heroes, Asterix and Obelix have returned to mash some Romans in their latest adventure aptly titled Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia. While this Gaul duo are no stranger to video games, developer OSome Studio are the latest to tackle this popular French franchise.

Similar to previous instalments, Asterix and best friend Obelix have once again been summoned by the Princess in Hibernia to help recover her father’s Golden Ram and of course remove those pesky Romans who have invaded their country. At its core, Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia is a top-down action adventure that allows you to play with up to four-players for some enjoyable party antics.

As a single-player game, Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia is a little dull, however when played with friends or family, it is a much more engaging and entertaining experience that does have parallels to games such as Diablo or the great granddaddy of them all, Gauntlet. Controls are well mapped on the Xbox Series X controller as you push back the Roman invaders, including unleashing super moves from your different characters. In terms of single-player, you can swap between characters on the fly that is required to solve some of the puzzles.

As mentioned Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia works better as multiplayer game and my children and I had a blast completing all the various missions, puzzles and battles. Sure, it may not be the most original game on the market nor next-gen but as a family friendly title, it definitely hits the mark.

Graphically, the game is not next-gen but does mirror the art style of the comic and is a very vibrant and colourful game with some 3D depth courtesy of the top down view. Add in some lighting and special effects here and there, including different areas and Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia does give enough graphical variety to keep things relatively fresh. Additionally music and voice acting is great with the later having some truly laugh out moments.

Final Thoughts?

If you love Asterix and Obelix, then Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia is definitely a game for you … or if you’re after a family friendly title, then The Ram From Hibernia will definitely keep everyone invested. All in all, an enjoyable title on the Xbox Series X that is also quite short that will keep the attention of younger gamers.
