Lock smarts

The Aqara A100 Zigbee Smart Lock delivers design-specific security upgrade for Australian homes, ideal for those who want a lock that feels as solid as a traditional mortice system while delivering the convenience of modern smart home features. Given that, the A100 Zigbee suits homeowners who value seamless everyday use as much as they value physical protection that is also a combination of a sleek matte black aluminium body with deep smart home integration plus heavy-duty mechanical engineering that is perfect for anyone wanting to upgrade an existing mortice door or build a new home. As it has Certified Fire-Rated Safety, it means the lock is designed to remain functional and safe during emergencies.

It is worth mentioning that many global smart locks struggle with the “Australian standard.” While the international market is dominated by simple US-style deadbolts, Australian homes typically use a more complex mortice system—a deep rectangular pocket carved into the door that often features narrow door stiles or external security screens that leave very little clearance. As a result, most smart locks feel like an awkward “bolt-on” adaptation that fails to cover existing hardware holes, but the Aqara A100 Zigbee is engineered as a true mortice-first solution. It fits the physical footprint of local doors seamlessly, providing a unified handle-and-lock replacement that looks like it was part of the original build rather than a bulky tech afterthought.

So at its core, the Aqara A100 Zigbee has been designed as an advanced, mortise-style smart lock for unparalleled security, including seamless integration into modern smart home ecosystems. Under its slimline casing, it offers nine distinct unlock methods, including a fast 3D semiconductor fingerprint reader, permanent or one-time PINs, plus mechanical keys for backup. It was also one of the world’s first smart locks to allow users to unlock their door by simply tapping their iPhones or Apple Watch via Apple Home Key. Impressively, this even works via “Power Reserve,” allowing you to tap into your home up to five hours after your iPhone battery has died.

Key Features at a Glance

  • Versatile Access: Includes support for fingerprint recognition, Apple Home Key, Google Assistant, NFC cards (*), and remotely configurable passwords.
  • Proactive Monitoring: Equipped with sensors to detect door status (open, closed, or ajar), tamper attempts, and multiple failed verification alerts.
  • Exceptional Battery Life: Powered by eight AA batteries split into two independent groups, providing up to 18 months of use before replacement is needed.
  • Emergency Power: Includes a hidden USB-C port for temporary power via a power bank and a physical keyhole for traditional mechanical access.
  • Automation Hub: When paired with an Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub, it can trigger custom home scenes, such as arming security systems or adjusting lighting based on who enters the home.

Unboxing

Well packed from Aqara, the first thing that you notice about the A100 is its minimalist industrial design and solid aluminium alloy construction. It comes with everything you need to install this into an existing mortice-lock door, including the electronic double-quick mortice lock body, Class-C mechanical cylinder, strike plate, and a full accessory kit with positioning diagrams.

Although the Aqara A100 Zigbee arrives as a comprehensive kit, complete with the lock, handles and a helpful mounting template, integrating it into a door with an existing mortice system proved to be a significant undertaking for a non-handyman like myself. In order to fully install the A100 into our existing door, we had to drill new holes and remove a fair amount of internal timber to accommodate the deeper profile of the new hardware. Because these modifications are permanent and require high precision to ensure the sensors and latch align perfectly, I didn’t fully trust myself to complete the job solo. While a professional locksmith is the traditional choice, they can be quite pricey; instead, I found a skilled tradesman via hipages who was considerably more affordable and managed to complete the entire professional installation in just under an hour.

Setup & Management

Once installed, the lock’s ergonomics become one of its strongest assets, specifically the 3D semiconductor fingerprint reader integrated directly into the handle. With a 98.6% recognition rate, verification is nearly instantaneous, allowing your thumb to land naturally on the scanner for an almost uninterrupted motion from approaching the door to stepping inside.

For those in the property rental or hotel industry, the A100 allows for remotely configurable passwords and settings via Zigbee. This means owners can sync permanent, one-time, or periodic passwords that is perfect for setting recurring access for cleaners every Tuesday from 1 pm to 3 pm—without needing to be physically present at the property. This makes it an ideal choice for Airbnb owners. The A100 Zigbee is rated IP54, which means protection against dust and splashes, so undercover protection (like a porch or eave) is required for Australian conditions.

Security is where the A100 distinguishes itself from many competing motorised latches. Thanks to its triple deadbolt mortice mechanism, combined with a latch bolt and internal night latch, it offers excellent physical reinforcement. However, the intelligence lies in its sensors:

  • Door Status: Built-in sensors detect if the door is physically left ajar and will trigger a long-time opening alert.
  • Anti-Tamper: An onboard alarm sounds if the front panel is forcibly pried or if someone makes several consecutive abnormal unlock attempts.
  • Override Detection: The lock can even detect if a mechanical key is used, allowing you to trigger automations (e.g., a smart camera) for added peace of mind.

Thankfully, with all this security and “smarts”, battery performance is equally impressive. Even in the event of total power loss, the hidden USB-C port and mechanical keys ensure you are never locked out.

If you have the Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub (required for remote features), you can add personal smart home commands based on who unlocks the door, such as adjusting lighting or disarming the alarm. There is also a dedicated Away Mode button on the keypad that allows you to arm your entire home security system with a single touch as you exit. Regarding privacy, all biometric data is stored locally on encrypted hardware (nothing is uploaded to the cloud), and this can be wiped by the administrator at any time.

The Aqara app is well-designed, featuring a setup wizard that makes connecting to your network straightforward. It maintains a detailed log of every interaction, tracking when the door was opened and identifying exactly which user entered and which method they used. However there are some considerations you need to keep in mind that thankfully are not deal breakers. In order to access remote features, receive real-time alerts while away from home, and use Google Assistant, you must have an Aqara hub. Additionally, while the lock supports NFC, it requires an official encrypted card from Aqara for security reasons, though most users will likely prefer using the fingerprint or Apple Home Key options anyway.

Final Thoughts

The Aqara A100 Zigbee successfully delivers integrated smart functionality and robust mechanical security, making it a great choice for Australian homeowners who want a lock that feels premium, behaves intelligently and enhances the everyday experience of arriving home. If you are handy, you can install it yourself, however if not, I would recommend a locksmith or a professional tradesperson to reduce any potential install stress or damage. Lastly, it also comes with a 2-year warranty for additional peace of mind.
