Amazing X-Men #1 REVIEW
Hellscape Future
After a grueling encounter with Wolverine as Revelation’s angel of death, the X-Men of the future are left with rendezvousing with allies in Philadelphia to salvage the mission. Amazing X-Men #1 explores further into the drastic turn of events that await the X-Men of the past. If they’re not careful, the younger minds of Cyclops and Beast will be trapped in a horrific future if Schwarzschild meets an end at the claws of Wolverine. With everything Cyclops and Beast have learned so far, to prevent this world from falling under siege by the Heir of Apocalypse, their hope lies in returning to the past to confront Doug Ramsey before he becomes Revelation and prevent the grim future in 10 years.
After 10 long years, Jed MacKay (Black Cat) brings back the title of a profound series filled with riveting action and adventure. In Amazing X-Men #1, the X-Men are down on their luck big time. Everything about this future is plainly wrong to its core. The devastation and revelation that a mutant X-gene bomb ravaged without discrimination, which changed the very essence of mutant-human relations, is a highly troubling concern for the younger minds of Cyclops and Beast. What MacKay has done is expand upon the outcome of Doug’s decisions and how those actions shaped the rest of the world 10 years into the future. Although it seems like Doug has changed dramatically into a menacing adversary, it’s not as terrifying as Wolverine constantly trying to hunt them down and eliminate them with extreme prejudice. This futuristic adventure builds as much mystery and danger as possible, like present-day X-Men titles. MacKay emphasizes the overbearing weight on both Cyclops and Beast only because these two are the most qualified uncanny mutants with a way of resolving an issue that requires their expertise collectively. There’s a consideration as to why this series makes sense because, with the way the situation is progressing in X-Men, it’s only a matter of time before that terrible future becomes a reality.
Lending a tremendous creative hand to the story, Mahmud Asrar (Absolute Superman) puts his creative skills to the test in Amazing X-Men #1. His linework and execution of environmental detail give the comic book a radiant composition of expression. With that said, having to not only illustrate the environment the characters reside in, the attention to detail of each character alone cannot be unnoticeable. Panel work within the comic book proves the passion and cadence of each scene presented. What’s fascinating about the artwork in the comic book is the level of raw impression it seems to leave after reading through it. Understandably, the comic book is supposed to be the possible future, and it’s bleak for sure. Asrar shows readers just how bleak it is.
Opposite of bleak, Matthew Wilson (The Avengers) radiates Amazing X-Men #1 with coloring work that feels breathtaking. While the circumstances are dire, it’s fascinating to appreciate the quality of work it took to create a deadly yet hostile environment surrounding the X-Men of the future.
Comparably, the lettering work handled by Clayton Cowles (Age of Ultron) is impressive. Readers can feel the tension through the sound effects of his work.
Matthew Wilson and Mahmud Asrar illustrated a cover that strongly captures the situation of the X-Men and showcases their splendid skills.
Overall, Amazing X-Men #1 is a great comic book that’s leading to something significant in the making. Readers do not want to miss out on the events transpiring in the future, as it correlates with the current running X-Men series. You can pick this comic book up at your local comic book store or online, where comic books are sold.
