Conan & Dragonero #1 REVIEW
Two Worlds Collide
In Conan & Dragonero #1, Conan of Cimmeria finds himself thrust into a world unlike his own. New rules and means of survival await him in these strange lands. Two worlds meet as the famed dragon slayer, Dragonero, comes face-to-face with the acclaimed barbarian of the Hyborian Age. Warriors of both cunning and skill must band together to save Erondár from a relentless, but maimed dragon on the loose. Will these two men of sword and steel find each other at their throats or commonality in hunting down a raging dragon?
After a brief introduction, Luca Enoch (Dragonero) and Stefano Vietti (Zombicide: Day One) plunge readers right in the middle of battle without hesitation. Readers who are familiar with Conan will understand that he’s always on a mission. Having to place him in a situation right at the beginning of the story works to their advantage. It creates suspense, curiosity, and most of all intrigue as to how Conan will find a way out of these difficult ordeals he tends to find himself in. Adding a dragon to the story serves as a wonderful underlayer to introduce Conan to Dragonero. The writing in Conan & Dragonero #1 has a smooth, linear path that progresses without feeling too much to handle. The pacing of the story feels right, and readers don’t get as much information as the characters do. The way Enoch and Vietti set up the two worlds meeting one another sparks an exciting adventure.
In terms of excitement, Lorenzo Nuti (Stimulus) takes on an amazing task of both illustrating, inking, and coloring Conan & Dragonero #1. Given the reins to make this comic book come to life, Nuti successfully made this story visually entertaining to read. The level of detail and proper use of inks and colors allowed this comic book to express the writers’ storytelling capabilities. Simultaneously, the artwork displays Nuti’s understanding of peak sequential visual representation of what a Conan story is supposed to feel like when reading. The adventuring, danger, confusion, and surprises within the comic book can be greatly appreciated by the level of dedication Nuti gives. Even though the comic book may be a standard 22-page read-through with bonus content pages, the cliffhanger asks for more.
Working together on a legendary team-up, Richard Starkings (X-Men of Apocalypse) and Tyler Smith (Absolute Flash) capture that same level of adventure through their lettering prowess for Conan & Dragonero #1. It’s bold and abrasive, which keeps readers wondering what will happen next.
The cover art by Lorenzo Nuti for Conan & Dragonero #1 does an excellent job at showcasing two warriors banding together in the face of danger and uncertainty. It makes for a great, enticing image for a fan or someone new to the genre to pick up the comic book to read.
Overall, Conan & Dragonero #1 is a fantastic read. It is greatly encouraged for fans of Conan and overseas fans of Dragonero to take a gander. If anyone is curious, Dragonero being printed outside of Italy for the first time is a milestone. Be sure to pick this one up at your local comic book store or online, where you can purchase your copies.
