Sleep Soundly
I had never used a sleep mask before and I wasn’t quite sure what to make of them. But the option to review one with built‑in Bluetooth headphones seemed a good opportunity to find out what the fuss is about.
Straight out of the bag the first thing I noticed is the material is lovely and soft, which makes sense if it’s going to be on your face while you try to sleep. The next thing was how well contained it all is. The cable for charging fits into its own little inbuilt pouch on the mask and is essentially invisible when not in use. The interface is a simple three‑button setup on the front brow area. There is an on/off button and volume up or down.
But how does it really perform? Well… amazingly well! The first thing I noticed upon putting it on (it has a velcro strap to attach to your head which is nice and simple and allows for adjustment for comfort) is that it does an excellent job of blocking out all light. This is coming from someone who has tried multiple VR headsets and always manages to find the gap/s where light gets in… this doesn’t allow any light in. This is a really important point that I will elaborate on in a moment.
Pairing is simple enough and I was able to locate it in my list of Bluetooth connections on my Samsung phone. I set up some Vangelis, lay back and took it all in. It’s one thing for this to be a comfortable sleep mask that blocks out all light… it’s quite another that it also happens to be an exceptional Bluetooth audio headset. Now, whether it’s because the blocking of all light helped me focus more on the music or just provided a semi‑sensory deprivation state that enhanced the feel of the audio I’m not sure… but the tracks that I was listening to happened to use a decent bit of the stereophonic landscape which meant that I was enjoying the experience of the sounds going from left to right seemingly through my head. I would honestly be quite happy with the quality of these speakers on a normal set of headphones but being part of a compact, comfortable sleep mask just gave them an extra level of delight for me.
The position of the on/off and volume up and down buttons is also really helpful, it’s easy to find when you want to adjust either and it’s not uncomfortable to use. I asked my wife if she could hear what I was listening to and she said she couldn’t. I don’t think I had it up overly loud but it was certainly at a comfortable listening level for me so I would imagine these also work as a great way to listen to whatever you want as you head off to sleep without interrupting your bed partner’s peace.
Final Thoughts:
Considering the fact that I fell asleep each time I used the sleep mask I’m going to say it does a great job at what it is meant to do. Listening to peaceful music, especially music that makes the most of binaural audio soundscapes, is a very pleasant way to just relax… whether you plan to actually fall asleep or just rest, being able to block out the outside world and just slip into your own world is lovely. I’d certainly recommend it to anyone interested in giving a sleep mask a try.
