Hotel Barcelona Under New Management (A Steam Deck perspective)

Check your expectations at the door… Hotel Barcelona has other plans! This blood-soaked, 2.5D slasher action game is a perfect storm of the idiosyncratic creators SUDA51 and Swery65. Originally released in late 2025, it was a game of high concepts and clunky execution. However, the free “Under New Management” update (March 2026) has “rewired” the hotel’s foundations. Having played this update exclusively on the Steam Deck, the game has finally found its true home on a handheld console.

For the uninitiated, the narrative follows Justine, an inexperienced federal marshal who harbors the soul of Dr. Carnival,a sadistic murderer with a penchant for theatrical monologues. Following a car crash, Justine awakens at Hotel Barcelona, a luxurious establishment concealing America’s most dangerous serial killers. It is here where you uncover secrets about Justine’s father and her own psyche, filtered through a darkly humorous and surreal aesthetic.

The story is bolstered by quirky characters and smart, introspective dialogue. While some narrative beats felt rushed at launch, the dialogue between Justine and Dr. Carnival remains a compelling counterpoint to the carnage. Characters like Vanessa at the front desk and the strangely endearing “Tim in the closet” add layers to a world that touches on justice and self-improvement through adversity.

Gameplay is intricate and rewarding where you navigate 2D fields using melee and ranged weapons that are upgraded through items like teeth, bones and ears. While early versions were criticized for “sluggish” movement and “bad” controls, the 2026 update provides faster attack recovery and expanded cancel timings. On the Steam Deck, these refinements shine; Justine now feels snappy and nimble. Furthermore, the technical overhaul has stabilized performance, ensuring a considerably smoother frame rate, even during those chaotic Slasher Phantom sequences that is a massive improvement over the stuttering performance found at launch.

Combat is tied to the “Splatter Gauge,” fueling the devastating “Carnival Awakening.” The update’s most critical fix is the reworked parry system. By rewarding “Just Guards” with HP recovery orbs, the game solves the original critique of “stingy” healing. Additionally, the removal of “Phantom Lost” on Normal difficulty means you can now explore the hotel’s branching paths without losing your spectral backup, a change that makes the roguelite loop feel far more rewarding.

The “Under New Management” update prioritized optimization across the board. The UI is cleaner, the skill tree (now including “Enhancement Luck+”) is more logical, and the stamina friction has been reduced to allow for the aggressive rhythm the game encourages. On the Steam Deck, this feels like a “must-play,” offering a visceral, high-speed gore-fest that fits perfectly in your hands.

Final Thoughts

Hotel Barcelona delivers a wild, stylish, and now thoroughly polished experience. With the addition of free crossover skins like Demonschool Faye and Slitterhead Alex, it finally feels like the full-course meal we were promised. It has moved beyond a “half-baked” experiment to a complete, satisfying feast. Under this “New Management,” it is a definitive Steam Deck essential.
