First Steps with Spot: What’s Next Spot? book review Dean Yamak

Summary: Another excellent Spot board book for the little ones, and this one was great for us around tension points like dressing, eating, school and bed time. Hope you all have the same luck.

5/5

Yay!

So First Steps with Spot: What’s Next Spot? accidentally managed to reinforce some of the most useful strategies we have at home for our 3‑year‑old. Thank you Eric Hill and Penguin!

We struggle with Campbell choosing things for breakfast, getting dressed, talking about his day at school, and picking his 4 books for bed… but when Spot does it in this lovely board book, guess who was suddenly telling us “I can do it on my own!” and helping himself to everything?

I really appreciated how each paired page offered a limited choice of boards – just enough to introduce some variability and autonomy for my 3‑year‑old, but not so much that his interest was exhausted as I initially explain what each represents.

Similar to my experience with another First Step with Spot board book, the board flaps were quite sticky. However unlike my other experience, the boards were consistently in the same places across each page, and I think the predictability and consistency made enough of a difference for Campbell that he was able to succeed eventually on his own.

Strongly recommend checking it out if you’re having tension around some of the same pressure points as us. 5/5 stars.
