First Steps with Spot: Spot Sees a Rainbow book review Dean Yamak

Summary: A beautifully vibrant board book exploring yet another Spot story, who has somehow stood the test of time to still resonate with young children for early learning.

4.5/5

Beautiful

First Steps with Spot: Spot Sees a Rainbow is a lovely board book by Eric Hill exploring the park with Spot and Grandma. It is brightly and warmly coloured and illustrated to the typical high-quality bar for Spot books.

Sometimes the pages seem busy for colour, which in our case we used as an additional challenge for our 3‑year‑old given he is already familiar with colours, and our current focus is more about linking colours to words and letters, or “I spy” with books.

The story lends itself well to exploring communication and relationships with friends – I barely have to scaffold because as Spot encounters his friends in the park the book provides the prompt for Campbell and I to speak about his friends at school.

It’s worth mentioning that the board book was pretty tight to begin with, sufficiently so that Campbell struggled with the pages and lifting the flaps, and he’s relatively proficient with fine motor for his age. After the first couple of read‑throughs, it ceased to be an issue, but I suggest you prepare for crinkled and frayed edges that little or big fingers needed to crease to find an edge.

4.5/5 stars.
