STUDIOCANAL AUSTRALIA CELEBRATES THE HOUSEMAID
STUDIOCANAL Australia is proud to celebrate the extraordinary box office performance of Lionsgate’s The Housemaid, the breakout hit of the summer, which surpassed USD $250 million worldwide and crossed USD $150 million internationally from 71 territories after five weeks in wide release. Australia continues to be one of the film’s strongest territories, generating over AUD$20 million to date, placing it firmly within the film’s top five global markets. The Housemaid has demonstrated remarkable staying power and continues its global rollout.
Directed by Paul Feig from a screenplay by Rebecca Sonnenshine, the film stars Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins, and is based on the bestselling novel by Freida McFadden. It is produced by Todd Lieberman, p.g.a., Laura Fischer, p.g.a., and Paul Feig, with executive producers Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, and Freida McFadden.
Speaking on the film’s success in Australia, Director Paul Feig said: “The response to The Housemaid in Australia has been overwhelming. I love Australian audiences, who have supported my movies since Bridesmaids, and who have embraced this film’s tension, humour and twists with such enthusiasm. I couldn’t be more grateful. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the film resonate so strongly there and I can’t wait to visit you all again for our sequel. Thank you, Australia, for always being so awesome!”
STUDIOCANAL ANZ CEO Elizabeth Trotman echoed those sentiments: “We are absolutely thrilled with the success of The Housemaid in Australia. As an independent distributor, it’s a privilege to be one of Lionsgate’s top five global territories for this release, building on our longstanding collaboration following the success of The John Wick franchise. The exceptional audience response reflects the strength of the film and the dedication of everyone involved.”
Following the film’s strong performance, Lionsgate recently announced that it is already in development on The Housemaid’s Secret, adapted once again by Rebecca Sonnenshine from Freida McFadden’s bestselling sequel. The film will be produced by Todd Lieberman, Paul Feig, and Laura Fischer, with executive producers Carly Elter, Alex Young, Sydney Sweeney, and Freida McFadden. The studio is eyeing a production start later this year, with director Paul Feig and stars Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone expected to return.
The Housemaid plunges audiences into a twisted world where perfection is an illusion and nothing is as it seems. Fleeing her troubled past, Millie (Sweeney) accepts a live in housekeeping job for Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Sklenar). What begins as a dream opportunity quickly devolves into a seductive, high stakes game of secrets, scandal, and power. Behind the Winchesters’ beautiful façade lies a series of shocking twists that keep audiences guessing until the final moments.
