If you’re looking for an affordable smart door lock, it’s hard to look past the TP‑Link Tapo Smart Wi‑Fi Door Lock | Deadbolt (TAPO‑DL110), a feature‑rich solution that comes with everything you need to install it into either a new or existing door. Just a word of warning however: if you own a door with an existing European Mortise Deadbolt system, while you can replace it with the DL110, the installation will be more complicated.
However for standard Australian doors, Lane or Lockwood‑style deadbolt, the DL110 is designed as a direct retrofit and the entire process can take as little as 10–20 minutes. It supports doors 35–55 mm thick with a 60–70 mm backset and for new installations, Tapo includes a full drilling template, however for most retrofits, the only additional tool you’ll need is a Philips head screwdriver. Oh, I would also recommend you charge the 10,000mAh battery prior to installation!
This smart lock connects to your home Wi‑Fi (IEEE 802.11b/g/n, 2.4 GHz) and integrates seamlessly with the Tapo app on your smartphone. Beyond app control, it supports fingerprint unlocking, Bluetooth, a keypad, smart assistant voice control (Amazon Alexa, Google) and as a backup, traditional keys. It also boasts a rechargeable battery rated for up to one year of use, emergency power backup via USB‑C and even a built‑in doorbell with variable volume set through the app. The DL110 also uses a large 10,000 mAh removable battery and is certified to BHMA Grade 2 durability standards which is impressive for its price.
Security‑wise, the DL110 the uses AES encryption and includes features such as auto lockout, real‑time alerts for unauthorised access and matte glass on the external panel to minimise fingerprint smudging. Fingerprint recognition is rapid at under 0.5 seconds and the lock stores up to 100 prints. You can set personalised passcodes, one‑time guest codes and scheduled access—ideal for Airbnb hosts. A clever touch is the ability to enter decoy digits before and after your actual PIN to prevent prying eyes from guessing your code. Auto‑locking (including timer‑based), verified locking, detailed activity logs and an emergency override code further enhance peace of mind.
Once unboxed, Tapo provides a QR code linking to an installation video, or you can follow the printed instructions to successfully setup the smart lock. In our case, removing the existing lock was relatively straightforward and attaching the DL110’s internal and external components was equally simple. As the Tapo app was already installed, adding the new device was as easy as tapping the + icon and selecting the DL110. Importantly, the lock must be physically installed before pairing it to your network.
The DL110 also integrates with the broader Tapo ecosystem, including the H500 HomeBase, allowing you to create automations with cameras, lights and sensors. While the lock isn’t a complete home‑security solution on its own, it becomes significantly more powerful when paired with other Tapo devices which is a highlight of this infrastructure.
In Australia, the DL110 typically retails for $249AUD (December 2025) and one of its closest competitors is the Aqara U100, another BHMA‑certified, IP‑rated smart deadbolt with fingerprint unlocking, PIN codes and strong smart‑home integration (including Apple Home and Home Key when used with an Aqara hub). However, the U100 is priced at $289AUD and although it offers Apple ecosystem support, it lacks the DL110’s integrated doorbell and tight Tapo‑ecosystem focus.

The TP‑Link Tapo DL110 stands out as one of the most complete and user‑friendly smart deadbolts in its price bracket. It delivers a rare combination of simplicity, excellent security features and deep smart‑home integration, all wrapped in hardware that feels solid and dependable. Installation is genuinely achievable for almost any DIY skill level and once connected, the lock performs with the consistency and responsiveness you’d expect from far more expensive competitors.
