Godzilla #5 REVIEW
Summary: Godzilla #5 is a rollercoaster of breathtaking experiences.
5
Epic!
Kai-Sei Battleground
The battle rages as Godzilla comes face to face with a fully powered Yacumama feasting on the very Kai-Sei energy within Godzilla’s body. Godzilla #5 raises the stakes that the team must endure and questions the captain’s motives in his decision to side with Lament. Jacen is given the choice to help Godzilla or let Godzilla succumb to a leeching monster who will inevitably consume the whole world. As Jacen isn’t very good with words, his actions will define how the outcome will be fair for everyone involved. A surprising team-up occurs right before a gut-wrenching revelation sends Jacen into an absolute rage against Godzilla.
Tim Seeley (Brilliant Trash, Chaos!) throws a curveball that no one sees coming into this issue. For those who have been reading this story, Godzilla #5 takes a hard left to epic stakes. Seeley’s progression in the story is paced differently from other titles of Godzilla. While some may have drawn out details for a few panels, Seeley’s advancement to get to the point strikes fast and hard. As it’s vital to include troubling hurdles for heroes, Seeley makes sure that these characters in this issue can’t catch a break. If it’s not Yacumama trying to rip Godzilla limb from limb, it’s dealing with the leeches that spawn from the terrifying Kaiju. This part of the adventure has a reader wondering how they will get out of their most dangerous situation yet. Additionally, setting up Lament with a revealing mystery of their own sets up a plot twist woven creatively into the story. There’s not much to dislike about how this issue is going so far.
Continuing to provide visual entertainment, Nikola Čižmešija (Home Sick Pilots) amazes with fantastic art for Godzilla #5. The artwork is, for better words, outstanding to showcase the level of a dire threat. Čižmešija’s task of providing one of the best sequences of movement in a comic book should not go unnoticed. The linework floods the comic book with action and grace. The story felt like a ride that wasn’t going to end. Undeniably, Čižmešija displayed incredible use of juxtaposition and linework.
The coloring work by Francesco Segala (Blow Away) and coloring assistant Gloria Martinelli (Magic) in Godzilla #5 is insane. The depth of color portrays a multitude of feelings and emotions wrapped into one giant ball of fun.
Last, but not least, Nathan Widick (Codex Black) has the pleasure of keeping all the craziness grounded in one compact and smooth flow. The dialogue bubbles feel chaotic, but given the artwork and color provided, it fits perfectly. As far as sound effects within the pages, readers will understand that these are necessary to appreciate the terror and awesomeness of these pages.
Overall, Godzilla #5 is a rollercoaster of breathtaking experiences. It stays on track with the essential goal of taking Godzilla out by any means necessary, but not in the way readers would think or even recommend. There’s more to come, and readers shouldn’t miss what happens next. If you want to read this issue, you can find this comic book at your local comic book store or online, where copies are sold.
