Fire!

Available on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5 (reviewed), Firefighting Simulator: Ignite is the latest game to tackle the dangerous work of first responders. Developed by Weltenbauer and published by Astragon Entertainment, it stands out from other attempts by successfully merging a cooperative simulation experience with the realistic demands of firefighting. Unlike the clichéd analogy, there truly is no “I” in TEAM. While the game can be played solo with AI-controlled firefighters, its real strength lies in its cross-play multiplayer, where coordination is essential and one poor decision can cost lives — albeit virtual ones.

Set in the fictional city of Oakridge, you and your crew are dispatched to a wide range of emergencies, from house fires with hazards like gas leaks, electrical faults, and collapsing floors, to complex search-and-rescue operations in sprawling industrial sites. The developers have captured the essence of modern firefighting, right down to the adrenaline rush of forcing entry with a crowbar, cutting power to prevent electrocution, using foam to smother chemical blazes, and carrying unconscious civilians to safety. The variety is impressive, with nearly 40 missions spanning suburban homes, factories, and even a multi-level shopping mall — my personal favourite due to its layered challenges and the sheer number of civilians in need.

Progression is structured with bronze, silver, and gold ratings for each mission, encouraging replayability and mastery. A training facility at headquarters provides a safe space to learn the ropes, and the tutorial system eases new players into the mechanics without overwhelming them. In single-player mode, AI teammates can be directed to perform tasks, though they’re not always perfect, which makes human cooperation in multiplayer all the more rewarding. Assigning roles, splitting responsibilities, and communicating under pressure creates a genuine sense of camaraderie.

Visually, the game is a treat on PlayStation 5 thanks to Unreal Engine 5, which brings Oakridge to life with dynamic smoke, fire, and environmental effects. The city itself is perhaps a little too pristine, but that’s a minor gripe in the face of such detail. Officially licensed Rosenbauer America fire trucks and authentic gear from HAIX, Fire-Dex, and STIHL add to the realism, and the PS5 version benefits from stable performance, quick loading times, and immersive haptic feedback that makes wielding a hose or breaking down a door feel tactile. Further, sound effects go hand in hand with the game to help build the tension and realism.

Final Thoughts?

Weltenbauer should be commended for creating such an immersive and exciting experience, one that respects the profession it simulates while delivering tense, rewarding gameplay. With additional DLC planned for later this year — promising new missions, vehicles, and gear — there’s plenty to look forward to for those ready to don their virtual firefighting gear and answer the call.
