Summary: An end is in sight... but is it the end of the world or the end of the current threat?

4.5

Worthy sacrifices?

After seemingly endless fighting, the B.P.R.D. must finally face one of the horrible Ogdru Jahad to prevent the end of the world. With so much at stake any chance of getting help in the battle will be taken… some may not have the result that is desired.

Writing

This has been a long journey… that has seemed to escalate and escalate and escalate. Just when we thought it couldn’t get more hectic and dire, some new threat popped up or the forces just seemed too overwhelming. But the B.P.R.D. and allies have made it through. We have had our heart in our throats for most of this experience and I can say that you will get a chance to breathe at the end of this book… just remember that this stories end is not the end of it all… the story continues into The Devil You Know. I won’t go into too much detail about the story because it’s best to experience it yourself… but Johann has a very important story arc and it’s a doozy!

Artwork

When I said you would get a chance to breathe at the end of this book… I did leave out the fact that you may be holding it for some time before hand… you also may feel your heart ping a few times with the visuals throughout. The panels do a wonderful job of bringing this story to life and there are certain panels and sequences that are just going to make your heart jump. This is the culmination of a lot of hard work and lots of blood sweat and tears and it’s all laid bare in this volume. Colour is used just right to set and enhance the mood, pushing what could be an adequate scene into a gripping visual feast.

Final Thoughts

I did not see the end to this story coming… I suspect some people may not like it… and to not ruin the story I can’t say why here… but I do suspect there are some out there who may be disappointed at the way things conclude. Personally I found it very enjoyable and Johann’s arc is full of philosophical moments for some great deep thoughts. It is important to have the space to breathe at the end of this series… we’ve been through a lot with the B.P.R.D. but that moment of peace will be short lived as we continue into The Devil You Know. For me this is certainly an essential addition to the Dark Horse Library and the wonderful Mignolaverse!

Father of four, husband of one and all round oddity. Gaming at home since about 1982 with a Sinclair ZX Spectrum. Moving on to the more traditional PC genre in the years that followed with the classic Jump Joe and Alley Cat. CGA, EGA, VGA and beyond PC's have been central to my gaming but I've also enjoyed consoles and hand helds along the way (who remembers the Atari Lynx?). Would have been actor/film maker, jack of many trades master of none.
