Pirates of the Caribbean
The Legend of Jack Sparrow

The Pirates of the Caribbean, the Legend of Jack Sparrow smashes onto the PlayStation 2 with an epic beginning that has Jack and Will Turner trying to steal an ancient treasure in a Spanish Castle. Unfortunately for our two heroes, things never seem to go right and the two are caught. To make matters worse, the two have been judged guilty and are awaiting execution but like a clichéd sitcom, Jack decides to tell some tales on how be became the man he is.

This is where the story begins as players join Jack on his journey through some extremely memorable moments from the first movie and of course a variety of new scenarios to keep things interesting. Although this game was released almost simultaneously with the second movie, the title is actually based on the first movie that may trick those unwary buyers in thinking that this is the sequel but with that in mind, it's still an entertaining romp through the world of pirates, undead and hidden treasure.

The Legend of Jack Sparrow could almost be considered a fighting game as you swing swords, axes and a variety of strange objects such as fish to battle your way through a plethora of enemies, adventures and dangerous bosses and as you progress through the game, you can unlock upgrades to your moves. However in order to use these upgrades, the gamer must find a set amount of money that is scattered throughout the levels. The characters also sport their own special attacks that are really needed, especially when the games decides to throw five or more enemies at you at once.

Apart from combat, the game also features a variety of quests and mini-games to liven up the gameplay of the title and apart from a single player storyline, the title also features some entertaining multiplayer options that allows the second gamer to control the second character which actually makes the game much more fun. However if you play the single missions, you have the choice of switching between the two characters on the fly.

Graphically, the developers have done a great job at recreating the first movie and the environments really help capture the feeling. All the characters have been professionally designed that feature high texture details, a human-like grace and even some humour such as Jack himself that nicely mesh with the gaming environment and best of all, the framerate is nice and solid.

As with the graphics, the soundtrack also captures the heart of the first movie that unfortunately becomes a little too repetitive as you progress through the game. Fortunately the developers managed to hire Johnny Depp to voice the character of Jack Sparrow and match that with other professional voice actors and you have one great sounding game.

In conclusion, the Legend of Jack Sparrow is an entertaining game that features some sturdy but sometimes repetitive gameplay that I would recommend to all gamers who love the pirate inside them and also wish to hack and slash their way through an entire world of nasties.
