When I first received this DVD, I was a little curious to as what this series was about because it was way before my time. Fortunately for this reviewer, I have not only come to understand the mystery behind Tony Hancock but also why this series was one of the most popular series of the 1960's. The Very Best of Hancock features six episodes of Tony Hancock making a goose of himself in Hancock's Half Hour.

The episodes included a variety of skits that include "The Bedsitter", a man who is trying to live the carefree life of a bachelor to an extremely entertaining episode entitled "The Blood Donor" that proves that giving can sometimes be dangerous. In today's day and age, the skits could be considered a mix between stand-up comedy because much of the dialogue is generally between two people. The true star of the series is of course Hancock himself who does a wonderful job at getting inside his characters and making the viewer laugh. The DVD also stars Sid James, the man who made the Carry On movies one of the best series around.

The Very Best of Hancock
Episode listing

- The Bedsitter
- The Bowmans
- The Radio Ham
- The Lift
- The Blood Donor

Video

The video is featured in an aspect ratio of 4:3 and is unfortunately black and white but still proves that British comedy is extremely hard to date. Although the quality is a little poor, it's the message that fortunately still comes across loud and clear.

Audio

The sound quality of the DVD features Dolby Digital and is a little muted when compared to DVD's of today. Fortunately, it's nothing to be worried about... especially if you are a fan of the series.

Extras

The DVD features artist profiles and an exclusive interview with Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, the writers of the Hancock's Half Hour.

The Final Say

The Very Best of Hancock is recommend to true fans of the series but unfortunately many viewers of today will simple pass this DVD in the isles, never knowing what kind of comic genius lies on this disc. Worth a look!
