    HISTORY

Thousands of years ago in the netherworlds of an unnamed dimension, a being by the name of Kulak discovered the black mystic arts of his universe. He became a sorcerer of tremendous potential and soon used his powers to become the high priest of the world of Brztal. Using the world of Brztal as his base of operations, he used his dark mystic arts to destroy countless civilizations on distant worlds. In events that have not been recorded, Kulak was somehow stopped and banished to a tomb on Earth, where he lay undiscovered for thousands of years. In the mid 20th century, an archaeological expedition discovered the hidden tomb of Kulak, High Priest of Brztal. Unwittingly, the archaeologists awoke Kulak from his deep sleep. For disturbing his tomb, Kulak vowed to destroy the Earth. (See All-Star Comics #2) Kulak was intercepted by one of the Earth's first mystery men, the Spectre who seemingly obliterated Kulak with the ring of life.

In the winter of 1942, the world was at war with Nazi Germany that was holding most of Europe enslaved. America would soon face another threat by the combined forces of the Spectre and Kulak. The Justice Society of America discovered that the Spectre had been missing for a number weeks and founding member Doctor Fate decided to search. Using a cloud of darkness, Doctor Fate discovered the host of the Spectre, Jim Corrigan beneath the ocean of Cliffland. By casting another spell on the lifeless husk of Corrigan, it showed Fate the whereabouts of the Spectre by opening up a portal to another dimension. By crossing the dimensional barriers, Fate discovered the Spectre guarding the temple of Kulak. By tricking the Spectre, Fate entered the temple and discovered that Kulak was very much alive and in some sort of deep sleep. Someone Kulak had overcome the Spectre and stolen the ring of life from him, making the Spectre a slave to Kulak. The Spectre discovered Fate's trickery and engaged the mystic mage. In the onslaught, the Temple of Kulak was damaged and Fate was sent hurtling through the dimensions of the infinity. The sudden jolt caused Kulak to awaken from his deep sleep where he vowed to destroy the civilization that disturbed his ancient tomb. By opening a portal between his dimension and the Earth, Kulak was now ready to destroy the Earth with the aid of the Spectre. (See All-Star Squadron #27 Nov 1983)

With Kulak's presence now on the Earth, people all over the planet were exposed to his evil sorcery. The Justice Society of America tried to force Kulak back through his portal but were repelled like flies. The Magician called Sargon the Sorcerer appeared before the Justice Society of America and pledged his assistance to them. Sargon then explained to the Justice Society that he also possesses a ruby that was made from the same stone as the ring of life, causing an unholy and unbreakable link between the two. Sargon explained that when the Spectre battled Kulak, Kulak was only seemingly destroyed but in fact was hurled into another dimension. (All Star Comics #2) While the Spectre was battling ordinary criminals, he became frozen and reverted back to his body of Jim Corrigan. The criminals thought the Spectre wad dead and had thrown his body from a speeding car. Somehow one of the criminals had gained the Ruby of Life and its power was effecting the Spectre. When the Spectre recovered, he flung the criminals car against a tree and then went to collect the ring of life, only to discover it was missing. (All-Star Comics #5)

The ring was magically summoned by Kulak in his deep sleep where he slowly used the ring to replenish his might. Its power constructed the tomb of Kulak where he lay, waiting for the Spectre. When the Spectre went to investigate, he was captured by Kulak's long-dead legions and was forced to stand guard over Kulak's tomb. This was because the Spectre served the ring of life, which now served Kulak. (See All-star Squadron #20) The only chance the world and the Justice Society had was to get Sargon to rescue Doctor Fate, so he could battle Kulak. Kulak's power was now causing millions of people around the world to hear the message of hate, thus turning brother against brother, soldier against soldier and even mother against daughter. Kulak had sent the Spectre to battle the Justice Society who were also consumed by the hatred Kulak had spread. Their first mission was to destroy the Spectre then turn on themselves. Meanwhile, Sargon had found Doctor Fate hurtling through the countless dimensions of infinity and offered him the chance to defeat Kulak. Sargon virtually delivered Doctor Fate into Kulak's hands and after a short battle with the high priest, Fate was defeated. Kulak retrieved the helmet of Nabu and donned it for himself, hoping to steal the powers. Unfortunately, Kulak's third eye could not penetrate the helmet of Nabu and was once again, like Dr. Fate sent hurtling through an infinity of dimensions. With it went the Helmet of Nabu and the threat towards Earth.

50 years later, Kulak would strike again at the Justice Society of America. (See Justice Society of America #8 Mar 1993) On an archeological dig in Egypt, Karter and Shiera Hall would discover an ancient Egyptian tomb with a gigantic sarcophagus inside it with a third eye. Somehow the workers with the Halls were forced to open the sarcophagus that awakened Kulak. Kulak would wage a secret war on the Justice Society of America, by turning the world against them. He enslaved the Halls and transformed himself into Edward Kulak and spread his hate through modern day television. When Kulak was sent hurtling through the infinity of dimensions, 40 years ago, it was actually for thousands and thousands of years. He reemerged deep in the past where he gathered his strength in ancient Egypt and used his powers to control their minds. (See Justice Society of America #10 May 1993) Kulak was defeated by Vandal Savage where he was entombed in the tomb that he constructed. There he slept and dreamt of revenge on the Justice Society, to turn their love ones against them and to make the heroes outcasts. Kulak was defeated by the Justice Society and sent back into the vortex where he remains somewhere to this day, minus his third eye.
