    HISTORY

The true origin of the Gray Man has been lost in time but it is known that he was once a sorcerer who was seeking to pierce Earth's dimensional barriers. The Gray Man finally achieved his goal and at one point, left Earth to reach the realm of the Lords of Order. The Lords of Order were so impressed by this mortal that they gave him an assignment on Earth, to collect the left over dream essence of mortals. However, after hundreds of years of performing the same task, the Gray Man began to feel that this task was a form of punishment from the Lords of Order.

The Gray Man then put into action a plan that would soon see himself the master of Earth and perhaps an equal to the Lords of Order. With the ability to split his body into identical clones, the Gray Man continued his task quickly and efficiently. However, he soon began stealing the dream essence from non-sleeping people, which left the victim in comas. The Gray Man's power soon began to grow which eventually alerted Earth's resident Lord of Order, Dr. Fate I. Dr. Fate summoned the Justice League to intervene and eventually stopped the Gray Man and summoned him to the Lords of Order for his crime.

The Gray Man pleaded before the Lords of Order and asked to be freed of his endless task. The Lords of Order agreed and the Gray Man was at long last given peace. There was now a void on Earth that was left by the Gray Man, so the Lords of Order appointed a new Gray Man to continue with their task. However with the banishment of the Lords of Order from the DCU, it is not yet known whether a Gray Man still exists.
