Devilman

Based on the hit manga Devilman, this is the live action version of the same name. Spawning from a virus unleashed by demons, friends Akira and Ryo are transformed into demons themselves. Akira chooses to fight for good and is forced to battle his friend Ryo who chooses the dark path (hmmm Yoda!)… There is no try, there is do or do not!

The movie is a mix of CGI and live action with some mixed results. The script tries to stay true to the original manga that was written in the 70’s and certainly has that feel with the way the story plays out.  Yet despite all this the acting doesn’t live up to what is being attempted and parts of the movie fail to move the viewer the way they should.

Having said all that, it was good to see Devilman brought to life, albeit with a little to be desired. It is certainly a title that fans should check out, just for the sake of seeing their hero moving about on the screen. For the uninitiated I would suggest that this movie is worth a rent before committing the bucks.

The DVD is rounded off with a couple of extras that show you how the movie was made and some of the CGI that was involved. In some ways they do help balance out the result of this review score from that of the feature by itself.
