Apparitions the Complete First Series

Collecting all six episodes form the BBC series Apparitions, this series takes the viewer on a modern journey of exorcism through the eyes of Father Jacob (Martin Shaw), a Roman Catholic Priest whose role in the church has been to find evidence of miracles in the world, in order to promote candidates to sainthood.

The series begins with the death of Mother Teresa where a young boy is miraculously cured of leprosy and years later, this boy, now a man is hoping to be accepted into the Catholic Church.

Unfortunately, Father Jacob and his protégé are drawn into the world of demons and evil and to compel the situation, it seems like one of their superiors in the church is behind something more nefarious.

The writing in Apparitions is first class and best of all, the series was actually created by Martin Shaw which assists in the credibility of him playing father Jacob. As the series progresses, we soon learn that “evil” is actually a real thing in the world of man and Father Jacob must undercover the murder of a close friend and continue to root out the evil that has come into his life. Apparently evil does not want him to become the head exorcist in the church.

The series in essence is a drama; however it does have some horrifying moments that work well with the mythology of the Roman Catholic Church. Just be warned, the series does start a little slow, however once it finds it feet, things really start to become interesting and we do not wish to spoil it for anyone who is interested.

If you are after a well-written drama series with a twist, than Apparitions may be the series for you. Recommended!

Episode 1
Father Jacob is approached by a young girl who believes her father is possessed by the devil. Although he is initially sceptical, Jacob is forced to take extraordinary steps to ensure her safety by staging a dramatic exorcism despite the misgivings of his church colleagues.

Episode 2
With Vimal dead Jacob realises that all his friends are in danger. He is forced to meet Vimal’s murderer on his terms in order to exorcise him which results in his own faith coming under threat.

Episode 3
Despite pressure from the Catholic Church to stop performing exorcisms Jacob visits a prisoner who displays signs of possession. This is no ordinary case however as Jacob discovers his subject may be possessed by a saint.

Episode 4
Jacob is called to an abortion clinic where he discovers a pregnant woman who is possessed by unborn demons.

Episode 5
A sinister apparition of the Virgin Mary begins haunting a Muslim family who seem to have a connection to Michael. Jacob realises he will lose Michael’s soul forever unless he can convince the family that the apparition is a fake.

Episode 6
Weakened by his crisis of faith and with Michael back on the loose, Jacob realises he needs to be exorcised himself. But with Bukovak blocking all normal channels, Jacob is forced to get Vincenzo out of retirement if he is to have any hope of defeating Michael before he can carry out his plans.
