Symantec AntiVirus for HandHelds

As technology becomes more and more prevalent within our lives, technology has received an overhaul by becoming smaller and smaller, especially for those on the go that still need to access their software, e-mails and even games. Unfortunately for owners of PDA’s, mobile phones and even portable gaming devices, some nefarious users have created a variety of viruses and Trojan horses for these devices that put at risk the software you use on these devices.

Not only can these crudely written nasties delete your important information from these devices but they can also compromise security, allowing others to access these devices which in turn allows them to view your personal and business files.

As handheld devices use wireless technology such as infrared, Bluetooth and WiFi, these viruses can be unknowingly transferred from one device to another, just by walking past another person. To compound the situation, these viruses can also be transferred when you connect your portable devices to your computer. So what can we do?

Fortunately, Symantec have released a very interesting software package called AntiVirus for Handhelds that basically adds protection to your handheld devices. The installation basically installs on your personal computer and your handheld but first, the program downloads the latest AntiVirus definitions from Symantec, ensuring that your device contains the latest protection. The program will automatically update these definitions for 12-months, thanks to its LiveUpdate capabilities.

Key Features

  • Runs natively on Palm OS® and Pocket PC devices
  • Renewable annual service keeps you up to date with the latest virus protection updates, features, and OS compatibility upgrades
  • Auto-Protect provides real-time protection against malicious code unobtrusively, in the background
  • Automatic scans can check for viruses after expansion card insertion or desktop synchronization
  • On-demand scans allow you to examine applications and files for viruses at any time you want
  • New virus protection updates are automatically transferred from your desktop computer the next time you synchronize your PDA
  • Wireless LiveUpdate downloads new virus protection updates directly to your handheld when you have a direct wireless connection to the Internet
  • Logging capability provides vital information you need to take action against virus threats
  • Symantec Security Response works 24 hours a day to discover and develop antidotes for new viruses

In order to test the program, we purposely installed a virus on our iPAQ before the program was installed and once the software performed its scan of our handheld, it automatically detected the virus and quarantined this virus.

Even when we tried to install this virus with the software package already installed, the program automatically detected the virus and prevented it from being installed.

In conclusion, Symantec AntiVirus for Handhelds is a must have software package for those users who own handheld devices and wish to have some piece of mind while. Definitely worth the price!
