The Nines

The Nines is a complex tale written and directed by John August which revolve around three tales about three men facing some perplexing problems which threaten the fabric of their reality.

Ryan Reynolds plays Gary, Gavin and Gabriel in the triplicate stories with Melissa McCarthy playing Margaret, Melissa and Mary and finally Hope David playing Sarah, Susan and Sierra. In the stories, each of the women play a different role which affect each of the men differently.

Whether it’s the TV star battling his own demons or the writer faxing the demise of his reality TV show or a video game designer becoming lost in a forest, each of the stories subtly link as the mysteries begin to make sense.

The movie is quite complex at times and some viewers may need another sitting to understand the links, however for main stream viewers, The Nines may be a little too complex and disturbing to understand.

However, if you are interested in something not so Hollywood, than this is one ride that you will probably never forget. Reynolds, McCarthy and David are quite good at their characters and it’s impressive to see them perform these quite diverse characters. A very interested perspective on how reality effects us differently.

Presented in 16:9 widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1, The Nines features good video and audio quality that compliments the almost cinematic experience. For those wanting more, there is commentary from both John August and Ryan Reynolds which does give the viewer a more unique insight into the characters and plotlines. The other featurettes nicely round off this DVD that is truly a strange and bizarre movie which can only be deciphered by the viewer themselves.
