The A-Team
(Season 3)

If you were in the 1980s in the US and you had a delicate problem, usually of a criminal nature, that the cops or anyone else couldn’t or wouldn’t help you out with, you might have called the A Team, an elite squad of men who’ve been hiding underground because they escaped from a prison. It’s okay though, because they were falsely convicted of offences in Vietnam.

Col. John "Hannibal" Smith (George Peppard, of Breakfast at Tiffany’s fame) leads the quartet. There’s also Sgt. Bosco "B.A." Baracus (Mr T), the in-ya-face black guy; Lt. Templeton "Faceman" Peck #2 (Dirk Benedict) aka “Face”, so he must be the good looking one; and finally, Capt. H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdock (Dwight Schulz), easily the ‘zany’ one. Using their military training and various personal aptitudes, they seem to excel at group-work and wriggle out of any unpleasant situation.

They are also very generous. Their commission is only 10% of all the revenue which is presumably guaranteed by every mission they opt to undertake. There is even a two-parter, “The Bend in the River”, which is sent deep in Amazonia: a secret plan by ex (not neo) Nazis to build a nuclear reactor—thrilling stuff (well, maybe in the ’80s).

This show is mildly amusing, viewed about two decades on. Unlike other shows, which seem to defy ageing (think Fawlty Towers), The A Team does not translate that well across to our time. Unless of course your sole requirement is hammy lines and awkward explosions and car tricks—then you’ll be fine. I mean, there are worse things one can do that sit down and watch this show… but unless you’re a nostalgia buff, spend your money on other things.
