Tenjho Tenge: Round One

Welcome to Todo Academy, a place of learning for those skilled in martial arts. Enter Souichiro and Bob, two first graders who think they can kick arse and take names from the outset and rule the school. Boy are they in for a shock! Right from the outset they are shown that they have a lot to learn in the school, not just from the teachers either!

The funny thing about this title is that punishment is meted out by students, not the teachers and as Bob and Souichiro learn first hand early on in the piece, it can actually be quite brutal. So they join the Juken club and the battle then begins in earnest for control of the school.

The presentation of this disc is pretty tight with some nice action sequences providing eye candy for fans of anime fight flicks. There was some concern that the translation from the manga to anime would tone down the ferocity of the fights and this has occurred only a little bit thank goodness. For the most part, its an enjoyable romp that is full of flying fist action.

Whilst over the top action prevails, there are a LOT of laughs in Round One with Souichiro being the victim of a love interest and other antics as the Student Council try to govern the school with an iron fist. It’s great to watch and I think that most people will revisit this title to check out the little bits and pieces that you might have missed the first time round.

In terms of the audio, I must say that I preferred the Japanese audio to the English one. The voices didn’t quite make it as far as I was concerned and lacked some of the authenticity of the Japanese edition. However, having said that, I am a bit of a purist and would say that about almost any release.

The extras on this disc are very light on and didn’t do anything for me really, there could have been a lot more thrown in as I would have loved to see the creative process behind the whole feature.

Round One is a lot of fun though and fight fans will get a kick out of it. Or a punch anyways!
