Stephen Fry in America

British Comedian and Writer Stephen Fry takes on the United States of America in this delightfully entertaining documentary series that looks at this amazing country in a way that only Fry could master.

From his middle class background, Fry takes the viewer on a thoroughly interesting journey through not only the popular destination of America but also some other places off the beating track that features a touch of social commentary.

Featuring six episodes from the documentary series, it begins with some strange tales of Witchcraft to gay black Republicans and the money making machines called Casinos. This episode entitled "New World" highlights some of the strangeness of the United States and of course highlights the differences between Merry old England and this country, of course with a healthy dose of humour.

Following the "New World", Fry enters the "Deep South" as he becomes a miner, visits a body farm and even goes on a balloon flight through the wondrous countryside. He moves onto the "Mississippi" where he highlights the colourful Mardi Gras to the boppy world of the Blues. In the "Mountains and Plains", Fry meets Ted Turner and even gets involved in a Kid's Rodeo.

Next up, Fry moves to the "True West" of cowboys, madams and a working girl which proves quite insightful. The best part of this series is that Fry highlights not only the strange and colourful characters of the United States but also the amazing countryside which is extremely diverse.

The final episode in the series is entitled "Pacific" has Fry in San Francisco as he speaks with the designer of the iPod, get an insight into Big Foot and finally ending up in Hawaii.

As you can see that the documentary is quite varied and diverse and as the series was filmed with a digital handheld camera, it almost gives the series a unique "family" Holiday experience which is quite endearing.

Needless to say, the quality of the video and audio is quite acceptable for this series and is matched with some interesting featurettes of Fry's American experience. In conclusion, Stephen Fry in America is a documentary series with heart and intelligence and is the perfect compendium for those wishing to see the real America.
