Otogi Zoshi Vol.1

This great tale takes us back to the very early days of Japan’s feudal system where warlords and samurai ruled the earth. A quest has been undertaken for  artefacts that will hopefully save the entire world from the age of darkness that has befallen the world.

We are introduced to the great samurai Minamoto and the hopes of the world that are placed upon him and the successful completion of his quest. Minamoto becomes unwell and before anyone can find out, his sister Hiraku takes over this highly important role, disguising her identity and becoming a “samurai” on this adventure.

There are a collection of artefacts that she has to find and the world that she lives in is fouled by the presence of bandits on the road and political infighting that threatens to destroy the ruling family. It seems that only by collecting all the Magatama, can Hiraku restore the order that is so desperately needed.

The animation on the title is lovely with a very traditional look to the drawing, combining heavy shadow work and detailed backgrounds. I preferred listening to the Japanese audio on this edition. Subtitles were adequate and ably assisted in the storytelling process.

Extras on the disc were a treat and actually well fleshed out. Of particular interest was the additional information about the period in which this storyline takes place.

If I had a complaint it would be that the story is a bit slow, however it seems that we’ll be building up the characters to continue their adventures. Hiraku is a well developed lead character in a complex storyline that makes for good viewing. Recommended.
