Mulan Musical Masterpiece Collection

Based on stories and facts from ancient China, this tale revolves around a heroine called Mulan who is voiced by the delightful Ming-Na Wen and revolves around a courageous young woman who takes her father's place in the Imperial Army of China. Unfortunately a dark menace threatens the Emperor and also the citizens of this powerful nature and without spoiling this impressive and entertaining animated movie, Mulan will risk all to save her nation... with the help from a few entertaining friends.

Even though the story does feature some action, it can be watched by children of all ages and there are only a few frightening parts in the film which some younger viewers may get startled. Needless to say, it's oozing with Disney magic and what makes this version of Mulan different from previous ones is the ability for the entire family to join in with the songs of the film. Whether you're watching the movie in lyrics mode which displays the words of the songs on screen, it's easy for everyone to sing-along and there are a few memorable songs in this film. If you have your favourite songs, you can also select certain musical scenes that does add to the interactivity of this film. Of course the voice of Mulan singing is played by Lea Salonga who sounds quite majestic and ethereal and only adds to the Disney experience.

Although the movie was released in 1988, it was good to see Disney break away from their mould during this time and try something unique and interesting, and Mulan is just that movie with a powerful young female warrior as lead who not only fights for her nation but challenges the status quo of society itself. Like Disney's Pocahontas, the movie is quite realistic and does not attempt to embellish the setting too much with over the top characters or too many talking animals.

As Mulan attempts to defend China from its invaders, she is also joined by Mushu, a dragon who is voiced by Eddie Murphy and although funny, albeit annoying, his character seems a little too "modern" for this entire premise but of course provides some entertaining comedy relief. Supporting our girl power star is B.D. Wong who plays Shang and provides a love interest for our heroine which is actually quite endearing and purposeful in the story. Apart from our powerful dragon, Mulan is also joined by Cri-Kee, a cricket that is voiced by Frank Welker. Fun and entertaining Disney characters!

At the end of the day, the movie features a very strong story which contains drama, action, romance and classic Disney comedy that definitely makes this one of the more memorable animated Disney movies. The ability to sing-along with the songs is of course the winner on this release and I'm sure children and adults will love this option.

The movie also features some well animated and choreographed battles that look brilliant on our FULL HD plasma that is nicely matched with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound which results in a truly impressive cinematic experience. Throw in some special features and Mulan is definitely a worthy purchase that we could recommend to a wide variety of viewers from young to old.

A great Christmas movie!
