House of 1000 Corpses

What a great movie. Twisted irreverent, I didn’t know what to expect when dealing with Rob Zombie’s directorial debut, however he has done an amazing job with a horror flick that hams it up and fully pays homage to older horror flicks that go before it.

Now I’d have to say that I do watch quite a few horror flicks and for one I’d say that this movie is not really that scary, nor for that matter particularly brutal, or have I simply become desensitised?

Four young adults doing a roadtrip come across Captain Spauldings House of Horrors whilst looking for a gas station. Whilst filling up they learn from the good Captain about a local legend, an evil Dr. Satan. Having been told about the tree that Dr. Satan is supposedly buried under, the boys decide that they just have to go out there.

Along the way the lads and their girlfriends pick up Baby (played by Sheri Moon), a gorgeous but deranged chick who tells them that she can get their car fixed when it breaks down in a storm and that’s when all hell breaks loose and we get to meet the freakiest family that I’ve seen in a horror film!

Director Rob Zombie has taken to this movie with such reverence, zest and zeal that you just have to enjoy it. It’s depraved, a tad gory and makes no bones about it’s love of older horror movies with it’s B Movie inserts with go go themes and general fantastic grainy look.

The video on this is excellent and is nice and clear except for when it’s not meant to be. Some purists will whinge about how the aspect ratio differs from other regions but to be honest with you, it didn’t bother me in the slightest. The movie looks great!

Audio is same again with good surround work really helping to keep you on edge when there is off screen sounds such as screams and other effects.

The extras are all good as well with one exception being the extra Tiny F#cked A Stump. It’s crap and didn’t need to be there. The rest are all very valid and the audio commentary with Rob Zombie is brilliant.

If you are a fan of horror/slasher flicks then make sure you buy this DVD. It’s really worth your dollars and will be watched more than once. A cast of characters like car wrecks and a plot that doesn’t take itself too seriously, House of 1000 corpses is the creeper hit of Halloween!
