Hell Girl Collection

The ultimate Hell Girl collection has arrived on DVD that collects the entire series of this amazing anime experience in an impressive collector's box. For the uninitiated, the main drawcard of the series is Hell Girl and according to urban legend, a mythical website becomes available to people at midnight and if the user enters the name of a person, Hell Girl will extract revenge on them.

Unfortunately there is a price to pay and those that have set Hell Girl on their targets will eventually need to pay Hell Girl back on the day of their death where they will be taken to hell for all eternity.

The series is extremely well written and each episode features a different group of individuals as Hell girl extracts revenge on those names that have been recorded on the website.

What sets this series apart from most is the amazing animation that has a real dark and forbidding feel to the entire experience and a few great scares along the way. The stories are very written, although a couple are a little lacklustre but the majority successfully use this formula and ultimately win.

The series begins with a girl at school being bullied and she decides to use this website to destroy the protagonists in her life. As the stories progress, new characters are introduced into the series such as the reporter Hajime who is chasing this "urban legend" after getting a lead about Hell Girl.

As mentioned, the animation is quite stylised for the series and seeing Hell Girl in action is quite horrifying and surreal at times, especially when her innocence turns to vengeance and the victim experiences what is to come. Great sound quality and some interesting special features nicely rounds out this presentation.

In conclusion, rgw Hell Girl Collection is a very impressive series that is reminiscent of DC Comic's The Spectre and the Crimson Avenger who although protect the "innocent", they punish the evil by sending them to hell. The parallels are similar, however Hell Girl does it better.

With great stylised art and some very interesting stories, at times this could be considered the thinking person's anime and makes you question how far you could as these character attempt to right their lives. What a fun and bloody ride!
