Fat Albert's Greatest Hits

Hey hey hey, it's Fat Albert! Man I was stoked to see this box set show up on the door from our great friends at Madman. Some of you would be too young to remember this, Bill Cosby had a cartoon series way back in the day called Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids. They were hip kids in the ghetto and it was such a fun series to watch.

One of the interesting things about the series was the fact that they dared to raise social issues at the time when no one else was really doing this with a bunch of kids who were pretty much all misfits for one reason or another. Valuable lessons were taught about accepting people for who they are and about making the most of the circumstances that you find yourself in. It also gave mainstream America a view of itself and black culture that really helped for the most part in educating white America and also was responsible for breaking down some of the walls of race that persisted during the 60's & 70's when Bill was getting this series off and running.

Another thing that had skipped my mind but is sensational is the end of each show where Fat Albert and the kids play in the Junkyard band on pieces of trash instead of instruments. Songs are sung about the theme of the show that are just sensational. Jokes delivered during the show are truly funny and you can see where Cosby might have sourced them from his own career as a stand up comic.

The audio and video does show it's age just a little bit but for the most part they were all fine. I simply enjoyed them so much that I was prepared to overlook little bits and pieces that might have been less than perfect.

The box set has four discs in it with five episodes per DVD. The twenty shows that are on the DVD were chosen by an online internet poll as to fans favourites and I guess as with any series there are one or two that some people may or may not agree with but for my money I reckon they got it pretty much dead on the mark. This wonderful set brings back so many great memories for me of watching the tube on a Saturday morning as a kid and getting totally absorbed into the magic, music, fun & friendship that was featured in every single episode of Fat Albert & the Cosby Kids. I think that many of you will also feel the same, especially with the news that they may be releasing every season of this great show at a later date.

This is very much a must have purchase for anyone wanting a bit of nostalgia and even parents wishing to show their kids the value of a non bigoted outlook.

Highly Recommended.
