{"id":5354,"date":"2010-03-22T16:16:42","date_gmt":"2010-03-22T06:16:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/power-up.space\/?p=5354"},"modified":"2010-03-22T16:16:42","modified_gmt":"2010-03-22T06:16:42","slug":"savour-the-sights-sounds-and-tastes-of-ethiopia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.impulsegamer.com\/wordpress\/?p=5354","title":{"rendered":"Savour the sights, sounds and tastes of Ethiopia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A one day festival celebrating Victoria\u2019s Ethiopian community will be held at the Immigration Museum on Sunday 18 April, 2010.<\/p>\n<p><\/strong>Visitors to the Ethiopian Festival will be able to enjoy Ethiopian culture and traditions, including food, music and dance performances and family activities while learning more about Ethiopian migration to Melbourne and Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>Come along to the Immigration Museum to meet the community and take part in activities on the day:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Experience a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony.<\/li>\n<li>Sample tasty chicken, lamb and vegetable stews the Ethiopian way: scooping it up with <em>injera<\/em> bread using your hands.<\/li>\n<li>Listen to the sweet sounds of the <em>masenko<\/em>, an Ethiopian stringed instrument.<\/li>\n<li>Watch traditional dance and singing performances.<\/li>\n<li>Take part in an Ethiopian circus or dance workshop.<\/li>\n<li>Watch a cooking demonstration and the film <em>Ethiopia.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>See traditional Ethiopian clothes, woven baskets, ceramics and jewellery in the arts and crafts display.<\/li>\n<li>See photographs, talks and displays to learn more about Ethiopian history, culture and migration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Ethiopian community in Australia is a recently established community, with the earliest migrants arriving during the 1970s when the Derg socialist government assumed power in Ethiopia. This repressive regime forced over half a million refugees to flee the country, with many being accepted in Australia. In the following decades Ethiopians migrated to Australia to escape drought, famine and political persecution.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria is now home to Australia\u2019s largest Ethiopian population. The majority of the population lives in Melbourne\u2019s western suburbs and represent a vibrant mix of cultures, including the Tigray, Oromo, Amhara, and Harari.<\/p>\n<p>The Ethiopian Festival is one of three cultural festivals developed annually by the Immigration Museum in collaboration with Victoria\u2019s culturally and linguistically diverse communities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ethiopian Festival<br \/>\nSunday 18 April, 2010, 11am \u2013 4pm<br \/>\nImmigration Museum, 400 Flinders Street Melbourne<br \/>\nAdults $8, children and concession FREE<\/p>\n<p><\/strong><em>Immigration Museum, 400 Flinders Street, Melbourne.
