1990<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: Development of \u2018action game for the new age\u2019 commences in April. In November, Sonic The Hedgehog<\/span><\/em> is officially announced.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1991<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: On December 28, Sonic The Hedgehog<\/span><\/em> for Game Gear is released in Japan, marking Sonic\u2019s debut on handheld platforms.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1992<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: In November, Sonic The Hedgehog 2<\/span><\/em> is released for Genesis and Game Gear in the US on \u2018Sonic 2s Day\u2019. Miles \u2018Tails\u2019 Prower is introduced for the first time. The game sells over 400,000 copies in five days.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1993<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: Sonic sponsors the F1 Williams team in April, and in the same month scientists discover a new gene with spikes similar to Sonic\u2019s. They dub the new gene \u2018Sonic The Hedgehog gene\u2019. In June, the Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog<\/span><\/em> cartoon begins airing nationwide in the US. In September, Sonic The Hedgehog<\/span><\/em> appears in US arcades, and in November, Sonic stars in the Macy\u2019s Thanksgiving Parade with a 65-foot long balloon. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1994<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: Sonic The Hedgehog 3<\/span><\/em> blasts on Genesis February 2nd<\/sup>. In October, Sonic and Knuckles<\/span><\/em> ships in the US. The two games could be combined by locking Sonic and Knuckles<\/span><\/em> into the Sonic 3<\/span><\/em> cartridge, allowing the complete adventure to be played. In October, Sonic appears in a nationwide MTV \u2018Rock the Rock\u2019 special shot on Alcatraz. Twenty-five finalists from over 100,000 entrants compete in Sonic 3<\/span><\/em> for the title of \u201cThe World\u2019s Most Hard-Core Gamer.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1996<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: In a videogame first, Sonic is included in the National Film and Television Archive of the UK, where historic films and TV programs are preserved. Marking Sonic\u2019s first full 3D <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

adventure, Sonic 3D Blast<\/span><\/em> is released on Saturn. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1997<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: Sonic R<\/span><\/em> and Sonic Jam<\/span><\/em> ship in Japan for SEGA Saturn.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1998<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: In December, Sonic Adventure<\/span><\/em> is released in Japan on Dreamcast.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1999<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: Sonic Adventure<\/span><\/em> ships August 31 in the US, eventually becoming the best-selling SEGA Dreamcast game of all time with over six million copies sold worldwide. Sonic\u2019s second cartoon series launches in the US. In October, Sonic\u2019s first clothing line is released in Japan.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2000<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: The Sonic fashion project makes its way to Paris as Sonic apparel is displayed at the Concept Store\/Jean Charles de Castelbajac. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2001<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: On June 18, Sonic Adventure 2<\/span><\/em> ships in the US for Dreamcast. In June, a series of tenth birthday celebrations for Sonic are held across Japan. In December, CoroCoro Comics announces that the artist of the Sonic The Hedgehog<\/span><\/em> comic will be well-known artist Santa Harukaze. The comic first appears in December.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2002<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: Sonic Adventure 2: Battle<\/span><\/em> is released for GameCube on February 3, marking Sonic\u2019s debut on the platform. Sonic Team\u2019s Yuji Naka receives a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Game Developers Choice Awards in the US, an award presented to individuals who have made innovative and significant achievements in the videogame industry. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2003<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: In February, the new animated series Sonic X<\/span><\/em> is announced. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
