Fat Sick and Nearly Dead<\/em>) the film\u2019s financial pledge launch comes on the eve of Apple\u2019s release of the iPhone 5 and The New York Times reports of continued un-empathic practices at Apple\u2019s outsourced operation, Fox Conn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/09\/11\/technology\/foxconn-said-to-use-forced-student-labor-to-make-iphones.html?ref=business\">http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/09\/11\/technology\/foxconn-said-to-use-forced-student-labor-to-make-iphones.html?ref=business<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Apple&#8217;s is one company which\u00a0socially conscious film-makers Anna Reeves, Elizabeth Nakano and Vivienne Somers,\u00a0hope to capture in their film \u201cStand In My Shoes\u201d, a 90 minute crowd-fuelled film exposing the world\u2019s empathy deficit and how a\u00a0new counter-movement of social change leaders are using empathy to transform lives.<\/p>\n<p>The team is exploring an innovative approach to improve corporate empathy at Apple with\u00a0Dr James Stoxen, Chiropractor to the stars, including Anthony Field (the Blue Wiggle), Cirque De Soleil, Beyonce, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Kanye West.\u00a0 Dr Stoxen wants\u00a0to help to re-design shoes for the Apple\/Fox Conn workers to help alleviate their physical suffering as a first step.\u00a0<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving worked with thousands of patients who\u00a0spend long hours on their feet, I can say with confidence I have seen incredible improvements in their overall wellbeing by recommending different\u00a0footwear to improve\u00a0alignment.\u00a0 I believe this is a positive practical solution\u00a0which could help\u00a0reduce overall fatigue, chronic foot inflammation and pain that could\u00a0alleviate some of their suffering to a degree.\u00a0 It would also show that companies like Apple are prepared to practice empathy for everyone in their supply chain who are contributing to their global success\u201d said Dr James Stoxen.<\/p>\n<p>Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, Founder and President, of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.SumOfUs.org\">www.SumOfUs.org<\/a> which ran a 200,000 supporter strong nationwide campaign calling for Apple to create the world\u2019s first ethical iPhone, remains unsure, citing reports\u00a0of unethical worker treatment.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/ethicaliphone.org\/img\/china-labor-watch-report.pdf\">http:\/\/ethicaliphone.org\/img\/china-labor-watch-report.pdf<\/a>\u00a0 \u201cThe issues are ongoing,\u201d said Stinebrickner-Kauffman before going on to pledge support for \u201cStand In My Shoes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an interesting time for corporate structures.\u00a0 Corporations, like humans, have a mind (board of directors) and a body (shareholders) but unlike humans, they have no limbic system \u2013 the part of us that makes us wired to care.\u00a0 Increasingly due to social media, they are being required to interact with us socially, which is redefining our relationship with them\u201d said the film\u2019s makers.<\/p>\n<p>In an age of transparency, corporations have greater social responsibility, says high profile interviewee in the film, Craig Davis, former COO of J Walter Thompson Global and founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.Brandkarma.org\">www.Brandkarma.org<\/a> &#8211; a ground-breaking start-up, which rates brands behaviour in the marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompanies like Apple are massively powerful, many have more economic muscle than entire countries.\u00a0 With that comes a great responsibility to look\u00a0into the impacts that they are having on communities, cultures and the physical environment.\u00a0 Everything&#8217;s on the record and there&#8217;s nowhere to hide.\u00a0 Comfortable or not, companies have to put themselves in other people&#8217;s shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the team of filmmakers \u2013 the question of whether true corporate empathy can be achieved may lie in understanding the science of empathy.\u00a0 They are the first film crew to follow a unique pilot study into empathy, led by acclaimed neuroscientist, Professor William Mobley.\u00a0 He has recently established the Science &amp; Education Centre for Empathy and Compassion at the University of California, San Diego, which will be conducting some of the world\u2019s first cognitive empathy experiments, with the aim of creating the tools for positive human behavioural change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImagine if our governments and corporations were more informed by empathy and compassion.\u00a0\u00a0 I think empathy and compassion research could give us the ability to enhance these centres in the brain which could change the world\u201d said Professor William Mobley.<\/p>\n<p>Funds committed via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.Kickstarter.com\">www.Kickstarter.com<\/a> will go towards an innovative online storytelling platform, developed specifically for the film to capture stories of social change leaders in communities from all over the world &#8211; a form of empathy in action.<\/p>\n<p>Already slated for premiere in January 2014, \u201cStand In My Shoes\u201d<strong> <\/strong>will have a multi-platform online release at Sundance with theatrical planned for both Australia and the US in the same year.\u00a0 A portion of the film\u2019s proceeds will go toward the research work for the Science &amp;
