SYDNEY, Australia, June 23, 2009 \u2013 More supercomputers than ever are using Intel Corporation processors, according to the latest TOP500 list. The high performance computing (HPC) community is especially enthusiastic about the Intel\u00ae Xeon\u00ae 5500 processor series. Launched only three months ago these chips are already driving the research and analytical capabilities of 33 systems on the list.<\/p>\n
The 33rd edition of the TOP500 list shows that 399 of the world\u2019s top 500 systems, including two in the top 10, now have Intel inside. Systems using Intel\u00ae Xeon\u00ae quad-core processors feature prominently in the list, holding 340 spots. Using reinvented high-k metal gate transistors, Intel\u2019s previous-generation quad-core 45nm Intel\u00ae Xeon\u00ae processor 5400 series is used in 263 systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Intel-based super computing platforms are playing a pivotal role in a number of research areas, from improving the safety of space exploration to forecasting global climate conditions. New features include elements of the recently released Intel\u00ae Parallel Studio, product support for Intel\u00ae Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) and updates for integration with Microsoft Visual Studio, Eclipse and Xcode.
