Major rumors are hitting news and reviews sites all over the internet, reports from sources like Kotaku are saying that the rumored Xbox 720 from Microsoft and Sony's 2013-dated new console supposedly codenamed Orbis will place heavy restrictions on gamers. Will NOT support backward compatible gaming, and if that was not bad enough will not support used games.
That is correct folks, NEW game purchases will be tied to only ONE account and anyone else trading or purchasing a used game will have to pay even more to unlock the game for use on their account. At this time it is unclear how the technology will work specifically.
Perhaps in conjunction to online servers storing information, there will perhaps be something stored on the hard drive tying the games ownership- to a certain account only.
IF this information turns out to be true, and there are several Impulse Gamer staffers that think it is, then this would force gamers to purchase ONLY new games. Plus if the backwards compatible information is true, then the games you’re playing today may be useless and unplayable as the
360 and PS3 is phased out… time may well be ticking, and consumers hundreds and often thousands of dollars in in gaming investments are at stake here.
On the flip side of things, used games have long been a sore spot for publishers and developers for sometimes since the money from used games only goes to retailers like GameStop and even BestBuy who also sells and trades used games. This stops that extra profit from going to the developers and publishers. So in controlling how their product is sold to the consumer and the profit going back to the developers and publishers, they can invest in perhaps the next great game sooner……So devil’s advocate here, I can see both sides of things, unfortunately I can also see the consumer becoming a casualty in this. What are your thoughts on the matter fellow gamers of the world?
