PS2 Reviews: PlayStation 2 Network Adapter | The Final Say! | Design 10 | Installation 9.0 | Usability 9.5 | Value 10 | PS2 Network Adapter - reviewed by Andrew B Review Date: 21 August 2003 Review Score 10/10 Distributed By: Sony | | | It's almost here, the PlayStation 2 Network Adapter that finally connects Australia to the glorious world of online gaming. The PlayStation 2 network adapter allows you to connect your PlayStation 2 console to the internet so you can engage other players from across Australia and the world in online play. Fortunately for impulsegamer, we were one of the first people in Australia to test out the features of the PlayStation 2 network adapter and needless to say all our staff were highly impressed by the proceedings. At the moment, Sony Australia are currently testing the network adapter with SOCOM, an amazing online first person shooter that involves US Navy Seals and terrorists. More on this later... When I received the network adapter in the mail, I was quite eager to connect it to my PlayStation 2 so I could be involved in this once in a lifetime experience. The network adapter also comes with a comprehensive manual and a network cable. | | | | The installation of the network adapter was extremely simply and it easily connected to a spare slot at the back of the PlayStation 2 console. I must admit that I was extremely nervous at the installation because of how easy it was. Once the installation was completed, I then proceeded to connect my PlayStation 2 into my D-Link DSL-300 ADSL modem. Once everything was connected, I then loaded SOCOM into my console and selected online play. Before I could connect to the internet, I had to setup the network connections for the PlayStation 2. This involved selecting what kind of ADSL modem I had (choices are USB, Ethernet or even an option to connect your PS2 to the computer), I selected an Ethernet modem. Once the modem was selected I then entered my ISP user name and ISP password. After my details were saved onto my memory card I then tested my connection and without any complications whatsoever, my PlayStation 2 was connected to the internet. My eagerness couldn't wait anymore and I finally joined the SOCOM server, selected a game with around 15 players and joined the fray. After a few seconds, I was in the game and playing as a SOCOM Navy Seal. My first reaction was *WOW*, I was online with my PlayStation 2 and actually playing against other people in Australia who were also in the same boat as me. The gameplay was extremely smooth, much faster and smoother than PC games online. For those that don't know what SOCOM is, there is a review in the PlayStation 2 (PS2) area of this website. It is also quite eerie hearing a strangers voice through the headset but after awhile, we soon began to work as a team and we were on our way to eliminating terrorists. We also tested Tony Hawk 4 online which was quite simply amazing as we were playing a server in Europe with about 10 other people. Tony Hawk 4 supports a variety of different gameplay modes such as capture flag, king of the hill and various other games that is sure to be a winner amongst gamers all across Australia. The PS2 Network Adapter is a must own for PlayStation 2 gamers as it takes the console to the next stage of gaming. All you need is a broadband connection and the motivation for some extreme fun and you will soon be in a world of new gaming heaven.
