The World Rally Championship comes to the PS1 in WRC Arcade. Following the success of the title on the PS2, WRC introduces a friendlier version of the popular racing title for the PS1.

WRC Arcade Features

  • Players 1 - 2
  • Developer: Unique Development Studios
  • Genre: Arcade Rally Racing
  • OFLC Classification: G

Officially licensed by the FIA World Rally Association, WRC Arcade puts players in the racing harness of one of the most enjoyable arcade racing titles since I played the first VRally or second Colin McRae Rally.

This game looks sweet and the cars handle like a dream. Physics are realistic and the dual shock purrs when in the right hands. Commands are issued from a navigator letting you know when to turn and what to expect from the road ahead.

Being fully licensed, the game showcases 7 official WRC manufacturer's cars and 14 tracks from the official circuit ranging from snow covered fields, fog and also the Australian Outback.

I really didn't have any gripes with this game at all other than with the music used in the game. There was nothing wrong with it, but it certainly was not at all inspired and did sound like some very generic music whacked on the game at the end. It sounds good but lacks a little of that special something that the rest of the game carries very well.

The Dual Shock rumbles and grumbles delightfully with the impact being taken by your car and the car actually reacts in a manner that you would expect it too considering the conditions you are putting the vehicle in. I did notice that the game doesn't allow you very far off the beaten track before setting you straight back on again, the invisible barrier around the track being fairly tight.

There are five game modes to ensure that you will be playing for quite some time including Time Trial, VS Mode for some insane multiplayer fun. Super Special Mode allows you to compete against 16 other cars on tracks that are run with a onus on time available to players. It really makes you conscious of driving decisions and ways of cutting corners to get that best time.

Grid Race was one of my favourites where you are competing against three other cars. The AI in the game is pretty on the ball and provides with some serious competition for you to enjoy the race against. Successful completion will allow special hidden bonuses and tracks.

WRC Arcade 2002 is proof that there are still very good games being made for our little grey friend. The sheer speed of the title will make players glad that they purchased this game as it is feature packed and of such quality that it will live in your PSOne for quite some time. I would recommend this title as a must play game.
