DVD Reviews:  CKY Trilogy Round 2

Raising Tennis Aces: The Williams Story is a film by Terry Jervis that tells the tale of two tennis superstars who happen to be sisters called Venus and Serena. Although you may mistakenly believe that this DVD is about the life of the two sisters but is actually about their father, Richard Williams who is the girls manager and coach. Jervis does an amazing job at recounting the life of Richard Williams who although not raised in poverty, went through a variety of hardships through his life..

Richard Williams also goes into great depth by recounting the story that his two daughters destiny was already planned. Williams also faced local street gangs in an attempt to allow his two daughters to play tennis on the public courts and fast forward fifteen years later, both the girls are valued at over $150 million dollars combined. The DVD is an interesting documentary but is rather self-centred on Richard Williams, rather than the two girls but I'm sure both tennis and non-tennis fans will get something out this film.

The video quality of the DVD is quite sharp and clear but it should be noted that this is an NTSC disc, therefore the quality on some PAL systems may be noticeable. The feature film is also presented in widescreen 16:9 anamorphic for that true widescreen experience.

The audio quality of Raising Tennis Aces is quite impressive and actually supports Dolby Digital 5.1 that sounds quite clear and audible.

Although the main feature focuses on Richard Williams, the extras basically focus on the two sisters, Venus and Serena. The extras include, Training the Williams Way, Williams on Williams, Venus and Serena (extended interviews), Williams versus Williams (Grand Slam Techniques), Director's interview and an interview with Pete Sampras.

I found Raising Tennis Aces a very compelling documentary that gave me a greater insight into two tennis greats. With a plethora of extras and some amazing video and audio quality, this DVD is perfect for all tennis fans or for those that wish something different on their DVD diet.
