Around five years after World War II, the Australian economy almost collapsed as the miners of Australia initiated a country-wide strike that had huge repercussions on the country for years to come. This documentary masterfully recreates this turbulent economic period with rare archival footage and recreations based on meticulously researched information. For the miners, the prime minister waged his own war against them which lasted 50 days, however what makes this documentary so engaging is the climate of "communism" within Australia at the time and this film also explores how the Labor Party Leader Ben Chifley challenged the status-quo and defeated any elements of communism within Australian borders. It's a thoroughly fascinating documentary that lovers of Australia history, politics and economy will thoroughly enjoy. I was truly amazed that Australia had so much fear against communism which made this quite an insightful piece for this reviewer! |
