Dead Space Aftermath

Inspired by the video game, Dead Space and Dead Space 2 with the former just being released in the console world, Anchor Bay have timed this release perfectly for DVD. Using CGI and anime styled animation, Dead Space: Aftermath tells the story of four survivors of the USG O'Bannon who are linked to the planet of Aegis VII. Unfortunately this planet was also where Isaac Clarke, the engineer and hero from the video game destroyed an ancient alien artefact that had the ability to turn men insane but more importantly, it could create Necromorphs that is almost like a deadly alien contagion. 

Just like Matrix Anime and Batman Gotham Knight, the story is broken up as each of the individuals recount their tale of misery and despair. Like the two anime films mentioned, different animation studios lend their talents to recreating the tale which really adds to the rich and diverse history of this video game. Do you need to have played the video game to enjoy Dead Space: Aftermath, the answer is yes as it helps fills the gaps from the game and adds a few new twists to the tale. Just the game, it features human drama that is merged with the survival horror genre as these survivors go beyond breaking point from these deadly events.

In terms of animation, the various techniques range from good to mediocre but this is dependent on your preferred style. There is some nice use of CGI thrown into the mix when the characters are being interviewed, more so interrogated on why they survived. Unfortunately as this was a review disc and not the final release, we could not review the video or audio quality of this DVD. With that said, our review copy also came with no special features so it makes giving a final score unfair. If you enjoyed the video game Dead Space, you probably should check out this DVD as it compliments the story well.
