Imagine American Pie and Euro Trip having sex with British Humour and this ménage à trois would birth THE INBETWEENERS MOVIE. To be fair to The Inbetweeners, this premise originally came from their TV series, however there are similarities with the aforementioned movies, especially with the four socially inapt and horny teenage protagonists. There’s also a scene with a bedroom, a webcam and a packet of ham… I’ll let your imagination feel in the details.

Directed by Ben Palmer and written by Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, The Inbetweeners Movie focuses on four teenagers who have just completed high school in the United Kingdom. However before they move on with life, they decide to go on holiday to Malia in order to get totally wasted and totally laid. However Will (Simon Bird), Jay (James Buckley), Simon (Joe Thomas) and Neil (Blake Harrison) have been trying this all the way through to high school and needless to say, their antics have caused some mixed and highly entertaining results. A similar theme occurs in the movie.

The story begins with a heart broken Simon who reluctantly joins his friends after being dumped by his girlfriend Carli (Emily Head). The court jester of this close circle of friends, Jay, comes up with idea of going on holiday as the "Pussay Patrol" in order to help his best friend Simon take his mind off his ex-girlfriend and of course, get them all laid. However like the famous quote “the best laid plans of mice and men”, things don't go accordingly to plan. They end up in a hole of a hotel in Malia, meet another group of girls from the UK and awkwardly try to chat them up and we're also treated to Neil romancing older British women in some truly disturbing yet comedic moments. Neil believes that his half hearted sexual advances are not cheating if only the nib goes in.

However like all good films, there are conflicts. Jay becomes ostracised from the group due to his idiotic behaviour, Simon steps over Lucy (Tamla Kari), a girl he meets who has strong feelings for him but his pining for his ex-girlfriend Carli (Emily Head) causes frictions while Simon and Neil are left to pick up the pieces and focus on their own romances. It's the classic teenage comedy with too much testosterone that never tries to push itself from this formula but allows the viewer to be drawn in as they laugh, cry and at times be quite disgusted at the results.

Video, Audio & Special Features

In terms of video and audio, The Inbetweeners Movie looks great on Blu-ray with exceptional sharp images, vibrant colours and crystal clear audio. Special features include a whole wealth of fun extras such as delete scenes, the London Premier and my favourite, the Bloopers.

Final Thoughts?

Never having watched a full episode of the Inbetweeners on TV, I enjoyed this film and had no problems in picking up the story and the motivations behind the characters. Best of all, The Inbetweeners Movie keeps its comedic pace quite well with some great characterisation by Bird, Bucklet, Thomas and Harrison. The female stars of the movie were Lydia Rose Bewley as Jane who had this unique quirkiness to her, followed closely by Tamla Kari whose innocence portrayed her character perfectly. Anthony Head also makes a small cameo in the film as Will's Dad and for those keen eyed viewers, Andrew Spiers (Idiots of Ants) is briefly in the film as a Barman whose comedic skills are unfortunately wasted. Nonetheless, it's a fun film that is definitely not for the politically correct.
