A group of College kids head up to one of their groups family vacation home on Lake Pontchartrain for a weekend of sun and fun…big mistake. From my short rundown above and seeing the DVD cover, I’m sure you can work out what you are in for with this film. Let’s get things straight here - Shark Night is a very silly film. Let me give an example; Our leading man plays college nerd at the beginning, all thick coke bottle glasses and studying hard for finals, but as soon as he looses the glasses and his t-shirt, he’s now transformed to good looking leading man with a six pack! Amazing, I know! Also from the moment our intrepid group leaves for the lake, we are subjected to scenes of sped up footage, from the entire road trip and their scenes of sun and fun to get them out of the way quicker so we can get to the blood, guts and eating. This sort of fare is typical to what we’ve seen countless times before, more recently with Piranha 3D - only this is toward the lower end of that scale with a bunch of good looking young guys and girls (in bikinis) slowly tossed to the grind, one by one, having very underwhelming deaths at the hands...or I should say fins of our other sharp toothed leads. Brought to us by Director, David R. Ellis of Final Destination, Cellular, Snakes on a Plane, The Final Destination and Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco (!!!) fame, he brings us a film much like 2009’s Piranha 3D, only his isn’t as good… It’s also funny to note that while this film is titled Shark Night, the majority of it takes place during the day… Extras on this disc include - Shark Night’s Survival Guide, Fake Shark’s Real Scares and Ellis Island with the latter two being the most interesting. One being about the behind the scenes of the creation of the CG and animatronic sharks for the film and the last about the Director, David R. Ellis. To sum up Shark Night - it’s a really dumb movie, with shallow, unlikeable leads and bad CGI. Shown in theatres titled Shark Night 3D, it’s like Jaws 3D, only with out the visual gimmickry and just the lame movie left over. |
