Almost a lifetime after the last Indiana Jones movie (19 years to be precise), Harrison Ford once again dons the Fedora hat and transforms into Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones. Unlike the previous movies, Director Steven Spielberg and co-creator George Lucas create a true 1950's pulp classic with a healthy dose of B-grade science fiction elements which goes hand in hand with the Indiana Jones character. Although seeing this at the movies, I was a little disappointed (19 years is quite a lot of expectations), however seeing it again on Blu-ray, I've totally changed my tune as once you have accepted the genre of the film and where the character was heading, the movie is truly enjoyable. Without spoiling the story, it revolves around an alien skull that the Russians wish to acquire as apparently, it holds the secrets of the universe. Unfortunately for Indiana, he is railroaded into the hunt which brings together new faces (Mutt Williams) and also an old flame of Indy, Marion played by the delightful Karen Allen. It features action, adventure and a healthy dose of comedy with a touch of romance. Although not as impressive as the first movie, it is probably on par with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Definitely an entertaining roller coaster ride for lovers of this genre or the character. Where the 2-disc Blu-ray collection does shine is through the special features which spotlights on not only the character but how the fourth movie was made. Spielberg is quite frank in one documentary that almost has him making fun of the stories that George has sent him in the past. The featurettes are quite nostalgic that really take you down memory lane and makes you appreciate the fourth installment even better. In terms of video and audio, the Blu-ray version is truly amazing. The video quality for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is so detailed with vibrant colours and sharp images. Presented in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4, it is a visual treat on a high definition TV, especially with the CGI effects. The audio mix is presented in Dolby TrueHD 5.1, and is actually even more impressive than the video quality. In conclusion, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull pays homage to the original character and sets a new direction for the mythos. On Blu-ray, the presentation is simply breathtaking and is a must have collection!
