Austin Powers the Spy who Shagged Me Blu-ray Review

This classic and clichéd comedy finally arrives on the definitive format, Blu-ray which once again brings viewers into the ridiculous yet highly entertaining world of Austin Powers, the international man of mystery. For those unaware of this late 90’s phenomena, Austin Powers is played by the multitalented Mike Myers, a spy from the 60’s who after being cryogenically frozen, finds himself in the modern world.

Austin Powers, The Spy Who Shagged Me is the sequel to the original movie “Austin Powers” and this franchise was so popular, it spawned a third movie, entitled “Austin Powers in Goldmember”. Although the original movie was probably the best in the series, the sequel is almost as entertaining and once again, our shagadelic hero must prevent the nefarious Dr. Evil from destroying the world.

Thankfully, Austin is teamed up by CIA agent Felicity Shagwell (Heather Graham), the daughter of one of Austin’s previous conquests and together, they are a force to be reckoned with. The story of the current movie is almost like a facsimile of a clichéd and bad James Bond movie with spy clichés, over the top acting and gorgeously attractive women.

Mike Myers also plays Dr. Evil and the nefarious evil Scottish spy, Fat Bastard which contains one of the best moments in the movie when Austin accidentally drinks Fat Bastard’s stool sample… it s a little nutty, believing it to be coffee. With a star studded cast that includes Michael York, Robert Wagner and Seth Green who plays Dr. Evil’s son, the movie also has a cameo by Elizabeth Hurley who starred in the original movie and this nicely links both movies together. It’s funny, it’s bad, It’s Austin Powers at his best.

The transfer to Blu-ray is quite impressive with sharp images, vibrant colours and a truly majestic cinematic experience that really made full use of our surround sound system. If you own the DVD version, there is probably little reason to purchase the Blu-ray version, however if you have always been after the movie, than now’s your chance to purchase the definitive version of the film in pure undulated quality.
