Bully Scholarship Edition

The PlayStation 2 hit Canis Canem Edit (or Bully for short) has arrived on the XBox 360 and WII which promises gamers who may have missed the title the first time around, a truly unique and entertaining gaming experience that many have commented on is almost like Grand Theft Auto in high school.

It's actually far from Grand Theft Auto and is its unique entity which is set in the private boarding school of  Bullworth Academy. In the the game, Gamers are transformed into Jimmy Hopkins, a student who is out for number one and when he is dumped at the gates by his step father, our young hero must navigate through school life by making friends, standing up for himself and completing a variety of enjoyable school based missions.

In its essence, the world which the gamer plays in is fully 3D and fully interactive with quite a large amount of attention to detail. Jimmy must complete all sorts of quests and missions such as protecting the "nerds" in the school, dissecting frogs and avoiding teachers as he gets involved in strife. The title is oozing with American high school stereotypes from jocks to Goths, nerds to cheerleaders, the title has it all and actually suits the game perfectly with its over the top stories which features extremely cheesy voice acting.

You must also attend classes which is where the mini games come into the title which does helps break up the storyline and main gameplay of the title where you must excel at maths, spellings and even some dangerous dodge ball classes. As you progress, so does the difficulty of these classes, if you fail, you just need to try it again at another time. As per Grand Theft Auto, Jimmy is able to save in his room, change his clothes and even try some home work which allows for some great non-linear gaming opportunities.

The title also contains a variety of combat stages in the game (although these can be initiated anywhere in the game, usually with consequences) that has Jimmy beating the absolute crap our of his foes and friends. Needless to say, there is always someone bigger in the bully pool, albeit sometimes it is a teacher that makes for challenging gameplay.

Graphically, Bully Scholarship Edition is a visual treat on the 360 with high resolution graphics, realistic texture details and some extremely impressive 3D environments which really make you part of this game. Match that with some great character models which move with realism and grace, a perfect control scheme and this title is almost its own person when compared to the PlayStation 2 version.

The game has moved from the PS2 to the 360 pretty well, new high-res graphics stop it looking too much like a port and there's been some new missions and classes added to the mix to freshen things up a bit. Controlling Jimmy is simple and the gradual build up of moves and options both in combat and social interaction helps things stop getting repetitive. The only downside of the title is that the camera angles that sometimes can become a little frustrating.

Musically, the title features an ambient soundtrack but what really sets the title apart is the clichéd voice acting from whiney nerds to sport minded jocks plus a variety of background sound effects such as the sounds of school, people talking and everything you would expect to hear in a school.

In conclusion, Bully Scholarship Edition is a great game that we would recommend to those who enjoyed the GTA series or for those looking for an interesting arcade, action and adventure game in one. Great gameplay, impressive graphics and decent voice acting makes this title a contender for one of the best XBox 360 games of 2008. Check it out!
