Continuing from the cliff-hanger ending from the previous season that saw Rayna (Connie Briton) in a medical induced coma, the TV series Nashville returns again on DVD that continues the colourful stories about these diverse characters living in the country music capital of America, Nashville. Featuring 11 episodes from this current season, Nashville Season 2 Part 1 commences with Deacon (Charles Esten) being sent to jail after the dangerous crash that left Rayna in a coma. However with the only witness in a coma, his fate becomes unclear.

As the series progresses, Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) continues to focus on her music career and Deacon who was injured from the car crash from the previous season is told that he may never be able to play the guitar again and as a result, decides to return to his AA meetings.

Juliette also becomes more showbiz orientated in season 2 with Rayna deciding to play more the mother figure opposed to country and rock celebrity which does cause a rift amongst her relationships, especially with her children. However what makes Nashville so compelling is the diverse nature of these characters and how stardom is sometimes a poisoned chalice.

There’s also a great new dynamic between Juliette and her new rival Layla (Aubrey Peeples) which definitely causes frictions amongst the country music community as both performers are quite different, especially Scarlett who is struggling with her career in this season of Nashville. There’s also a great moment in the final episode that sees Deacon address his past struggles with a mid-season cliff hanger seeing Juliette’s reputation tarnished.

Final Thoughts?

All in all, season 2 part 1 of Nashville is an interesting snapshot into the music world that features some great performances, especially by Connie Britton, Hayden Panettiere and Clare Bowen as Scarlett O’Connor which really make this series such a great watch, albeit a little clichéd at times.
