MEL GIBSON’S HACKSAW RIDGE TO HAVE WORLD PREMIERE AT 73rd VENICE FILM FESTIVAL

FRIDAY JULY 29 – Ahead of the worldwide release in cinemas this November, Mel Gibson’s HACKSAW RIDGE will have its World Premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September.

The announcement overnight coincided with the release of the official trailer for the film which has been celebrated by news and entertainment sites around the world and garnered positive reactions, praise and even awards buzz.

Shot in various locations across New South Wales in 2015, HACKSAW RIDGE stars Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man, The Social Network, 99 Homes) and Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers, Into The Wild), joined by Australian actors Sam Worthington (Avatar, Everest), Luke Bracey (Home & Away, The Best of Me, upcoming Point Break), Ryan Corr (The Water DivinerHolding The Man, TV’s Packed To The Rafters), Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies, Knight of Cups) and Academy Award® nominee Rachel Griffiths (TV’s Brothers & Sisters, Six Feet Under, Hilary and Jackie).

Rounding out the supporting cast is an impressive mix of Australian and international talent, including Richard Roxburgh, Luke Pegler, Ben Mingay, Firass Dirani, Nico Cortez, Harry Greenwood, Milo Gibson and Nathaniel Buzolic.

HACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun.

He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong.  As an army medic he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers.  Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honour.

HACKSAW RIDGE marks Gibson’s return to directing for the first time since the Academy Award® nominated Apocalypto. As an actor he gained international attention as the lead in the now classic Australian Mad Max films and went on to star in the hugely successful Lethal Weapon movies. His other acting credits include Gallipoli, Ransom, Payback, We Were Soldiers, Signs, and The PatriotGibson first directed and starred as the lead in The Man Without A Face, swiftly followed by Braveheart, winner of five Academy Awards®, including Best Picture and Best Director.  The next film he directed, The Passion of The Christ, earned three Academy Award® nominations.

HACKSAW RIDGE will be released in cinemas across Australia and New Zealand on November 3rd 2016.
