Space Ghost Coast To Coast: From The Kentucky Nightmare

Danger, danger! Inter-galactic retro schlock! Imagine a talk-show hosted by the super-ego of a 1960s Hanna-Barbera hero, Space Ghost. This is the fifth DVD collection of the Cartoon Network [adult swim] series which started in 1994.

Various real-world guests, including Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, Conan O’Brien, Björk and Jerry Springer, float down on a TV screen for a trans-cosmic interview with from the buzzing studio on a remote planet. They are often stunned by the disjointed, random conversation which is as hard for us as for them to follow. Part of the chaos comes from Zorak, a pure-evil space insect who also provides music for the show and Moltar, the panel operator. They gang-up against the host, who is sufficiently flawed as it is.

A personal favourite was the Chambraign episode, in which Space Ghost tries to improve his mind and hair with the same product, only to have its makers (Giant floating brains) come to seek revenge.

The show is instantly appealing. The jumpy, off-the-wall humour and rough editing, as well as steady supply of cultural references, means I kept coming back for more. The From The Kentucky Nightmare DVD covers the 13 rare episodes from 1999 to 2002. I couldn’t recommend this one enough. I am a proud overnight-converted fan and will be looking out for the rest. The look and feel are great and the over-all attitude is punchy.

The audio is only 2.0 but why would you need more? There are numerous extras including a very interesting table read and the raw Conan O’Brien interview.
